Why We Are Where We Are Today

Yesterday, I posted this video of the Nazi blood judge Roland Freisler berating a political dissident in a comment on a different thread.  This is not the first time that I have seen this video.  I have watched it many times before for the powerful message that it conveys.  There is also a movie about this particular event that I have seen, but unfortunately cannot recall the name.

I say powerful message because this event has a couple of similarities, and striking dissimilarity with what recently took place in Iran.  The defendant in this case is a former Nazi sympathizer.  He had been in Poland trying to spread propaganda about “German heritage.”  But he later saw the true nature of the Nazis and how they treated those who disagreed with them--and for the purposes of this blog, I am only talking about political dissidents in Nazi Germany.  He talks about “murders” that he saw, which caused him to become a dissident.  Freisler than tries to force him to express some regret, but the defendant—in a display of utmost courage—refuses.  He says “no” when he is asked if he is “cracking” under his own “villainy.”  Pure courage.  No regrets, no confessions, no apologies…even in face of certain death.  This man was later executed, with a guillotine.

We had a very similar situation with elements of the “Green Movement” when they were put on show trials by the IRI.  They were mostly former hardcore Islamist revolutionaries.  They had seen injustice, murder and tyranny.  They became opposed to it.  But when it came time to stand their ground, they folded.  Unlike that brave man who stood up and said what he believed in to a belligerent Freisler—and in , all of those guys wrote confessions, apologized, reaffirmed their allegiance to the Islamic Republic and generally shut their mouths.  And that is why, ladies and gentlemen, we are where we are today.  We don’t have those who stand up for their principles, even if they have one.  And the rest of us—myself included—are writing blogs under anonymous names and traveling to Iran for the summer to enjoy the food and fun.  The Islamic Republic will rule us for decades to come.

I don't think so

by Azin Izadifar on

There were a lot of prisoners in Iran who did not wrote those confessions, and were executed by thousands years ago. But as time passed we learned that we have to survive, get out of prison and do what we were doing in a different way. To me the problems is that most of us donot really know what we are fighting with and what do we want. Even back at those days our political activists were members of political groups. Nowadays we see more individuals who know a little bit more what they are doing. That was an absolutely powerful clip. But to me the power does not come from just courage, but from being able to think, to ask questions, thinking twice and more and deep and make a clear decision, knowing what he is fighting with and who he is and what the consequences will be.

and save your ass to fight another day, another way.Ive seen the courage of Iranians slandered elsewhere, but I can't accept that as true, or as an explaination of  why "You're where you are".

Iran's would-be reformers face a quite robust, & ruthless dictatorship....this may be a long struggle, and the Arrows that will kill the Beast have not been made yet.Iran's Resistance already has plenty of very dead martyrs, but needs living Archers.

Sophie Scholl – The Final Days

It's a powerful movie and in many ways is similar to the rule of "law" in Iran.  I may blog about it one day.  Highly recommend at 4 stars.  You can get is on Netflix.

Everything is sacred

While I agree with you in principle, fact remains that these people, be it Green, organge or brown realize that their existence lies only in their unity - most IRONIC since we Iranians know no such thing as unity, but the alliance knows if they let go a centimeters, they'll loose a million kilometers.

They bicker and fight over what's left over of Iran and her resources, but at the end of the day they all know the scum bags need to stick together, and stick they do!
