As if it ever was! Why do we always need tragedies to convince us of such facts?

BAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS There is no such a thing as 'safe' nuclear power plant. unless you don't care about human life. Until fusion technology is improved ; there should be no more permits  issued or cooperation by the IAEA to build one especially in quake-prone areas.

Wow, I just read comments of Engineer Goto on the other

disaster thread. This is really bad. Some people will probably kill themselves over these engineering mistakes, knowing Japanese attitude about these kind of things. Not that I know much about details of their mindset but I have a general idea about their thinking.

Dear Vildemose, what an important comment

As an engineer, I can't help thinking that even though on the face of it, passive design seems safer, I would like to read more about it to ensure one thing has not been fixed and in the course of it another broken. To make sure the passive design really will result in more safety. Thanks for writing about this very important point in design of nuclear power plants. How sad it is to know that redundancy plans did not work. From working in other industries, I know that studies are done in which indicate safety of these redundant systems. In this case, it looks like they did not perform the study correctly.

در چنین مواقعی واقعا قانون بقا بی‌ رحمانه حکم می‌کند.  بی‌ چاره سالمندانی که تو این وضعیت گیر کردند و بدتر فرزندان یا پرستارانشان را هم به دست این فاجعه از دست داده‌اند و تنها مانده‌اند.

ژاپنی‌ها درست است که تو دار هستند ولی‌ ظاهراً خشن هم هستند و به نظر می‌رسه ترجیح میدند مردم بمیرند ولی‌ کمک نخوان.  همین چند وقت پیش فیلمی بنام John Rabe دیدم که چگونه تو WWII ۲۰۰،۰۰۰ نفر چینی‌ بیچاره رو از چنگال ژاپنی‌ها نجات داد.

حالا وقت این حرفها نیست ولی‌ تو جنگ ژاپنی‌ها کمتر از هیتلر قتل عام نکردند.  حالا هم میخوان هم چیز رو زیر فرش جارو کنند. ‌ای بابا.  انگار دوران George W و Katrina هستش با اینکه این فاجعه ۱۰۰ درجه بیشتره و هنوز تموم نشده و شاید تا ۲۴ ساعت بعد بد تر هم بشه.

""The Japanese plant is an old model, unfortunat­ely like almost all of those in operation in the U.S. Operators of similar early-vint­age General Electric Co. boiling-wa­ter reactors in the U.S. are trying to understand events in Japan.

The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear-po­wer plant involved multiple system failures that cast doubt on the guiding principle of the nuclear power industry: that engineers can build enough redundancy into safety systems to overcome any threat. Newer plants, especially in Europe, use technology several generation­s ahead of those in Japan.

The Japanese nuclear accident has come at a delicate time for the nuclear-po­wer industry, growing globally, for the first time in decades as a new generation of "passive" designs is being embraced as offering more safety. The passive feature means they rely less on electrical­ly driven pumps and valves, for safety, and more on systems designed to shut down plants safely in emergencie­s and to prevent operator error.

For example, the Westinghou­se AP 1000 reactor places cooling water at a level above the reactor—un­like the Fukushima design—so that it would naturally flow down. Older reactors often pump water up. Passive systems keep fissionabl­e material in contact using spring loaded blocks the push against the material. The springs release and the blocks fall away when any of a number of triggers activate (loss of water containmen­t, loss of power, temperatur­e spikes). The fissionabl­e material literally drops into safe boxes which tamp down the reactions.

Our problem is that we have not made the kind of progress these innovation­s represent because we have not been pursuing alternativ­e energy aggressive­ly or consistent­ly. ""
