re-built timber by timber after being damaged in Manchester bombing.
Technically speaking, this building can no longer be the oldest one in Manchester, can it?!

On 15 June 1996 an IRA bomb destroyed parts of the shopping area in central Manchester. A few years later the city centre was reopened with some of the old architecture being replaced by new structures. As a result Manchester city centre is now a place where buildings centuries apart are standing shoulder to shoulder. Despite my original assumption, old and new are brought together in a contrasting yet compatible manner. Don't just take my word for it; see the beauty of this striking combination for yourselves.
