Pomegranates for Peace?

Solving the US - Iran Conflict

Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars: Journalist Robin Wright argues that the key to mending relations between Iran and the United States is to work on "areas of commonality, rather than the greatest confrontation." As an example, Wright suggests US-Iran collaboration on influencing Afghan farmers to ditch poppy cultivation for pomegranate farming. Other speakers: Robert Litwak, Giandomenico Picco and John Tirman.

Iran has stated poppy

by OmidKarimi on

Iran has stated poppy cultivation as a cooperation subject between Iran, NATO and the US since the dawn of the Afghan invasion. The US and NATO sought to use assistance on this matter as a trading tool in Irans nuclear issue, thus putting the issue in a political dead lock.

Btw, NATO in Afghanistan have no power to stop poppy cultivation, the entire warlord society, including the Taleban of the South, would eat up the small control they have left in the country.

No Afghan farmer is going to dump his several hundred dollar a month industry just to make food for his own people and region, sadly. Its a part of their culture now. Same tendencies can be seen growing in Southern Lebanon.
