Canada recognizes Norooz
by Ardavan2 (not verified) on Tue Mar 24, 2009 03:25 AM PDTA Persian myself, I understand and sympathise with the comments from Ashti. Would the day come when we, Iranians, can listen to differing points of view and, if not persuaded, reason against them the way it is done in today's more civilised societies - without insults and without ridicule?
Norooz, and whatever else we cherish in our common Iranian heritage, is NOT a Persian monopoly. The Medes who formed the first Iranian empire and who were the ancestors of today's Kurds of whatever nationality, were not Persians. Nor were the Parthians (Ashkanids)who took Iran back from Greeks and guarded the integrity and identity of Iran for over 400 years while the Roman empire was born and grew to become the largest empire the world had seen. They were not Persians, but were Iranians who played their parts in upholding, enriching, and passing our valued heritage to next generations.
After the Arab conquest, the survival of our Iranian identity, and the language itself, was achieved by that most enlightened and admirable of all post-Islamic dynasties, the Samanids. They too were Iranians, but not Persians.
And let us not forget that in more recent times our ill-fated but definitive exit from centuries of imposed ignorance and backwardness came about through the perseverance of Azari Iranians led by Sattar Khan and Bagher Khan.
Is it not short-sighted, even unwise, to insist that everything Iranian and valuable is a Persian property?
Dear Ashti, you are in principle right. Larger and dearer than Persian/Azari/Kurdish/Baluch/etc. is Iran and the good aspects of Iranian culture that we share together.
Nowruz Declaration in Canada
by Shaya (not verified) on Sun Mar 08, 2009 08:42 AM PDTThis is a video of the Ontario provincial government (parliament) recognizing Nowruz. The British Columbia provincial government has also recognized the Spring Equinox of each year as Nowruz, and I believe this occurred before the Ontario recognition (though I'm not 100% certain). The Canadian parliament has not yet recognized Nowruz, but there are efforts to make that happen as well. There is another effort to have the United Nations recognize the Spring Equinox as Nowruz, which would make it a globally recognized event.
about your comment on persian new year
by kurush1 (not verified) on Sun Mar 01, 2009 03:51 PM PSTyes it is written on stone.PERSIANS were the first nation who celeberate first day of spring.good you mentioned that other countries celeberate nourouz too, it is from PERSIAN as a gift to other nations , arabs, kords, turks and Europeans and Africans ,and so long. as a matter of fact these countries were belong to persian empire for more than thousands years( 29 countries).that is why they are similiar to PERSIAN. i don't know why when it comes to PERSIAN culture , there are so much jealousy. thank God our enemies are some low class idiots, none educated people.
p.s. this happened on parliament last year march 2008 , that is why they are talking about last week . and they are canadian intelligent not idiots.they know history better than you.UPDATE your information first, and then start talking none sense.
would you say things like that when it comes to Chiness, roman, or other cultural events too.?

by ashti bahadorani (not verified) on Wed Feb 25, 2009 08:43 PM PSTtwo things:
1. cultural values are NOT written in stone; once upon a time Islam was only the religion of Arabs now it's many ethnic groups and nations. So, Newrooz or Newroz no longer is a PERSIAN occasion but an Azarbaijani, Kurdish, Turkmani, Afghani, etc etc occasion. STOP being so irrogant and so full of yourselves Persians, please. just be like everyone else: human beings.
2. Most of these idiots who approved that also don't know anything about this. Prove? they all thing that Newrooz is already here, in February. They even say "last week I attended Newrooz ceremoney". what a bunch of idiots!
cheers,

by impressed! (not verified) on Mon Feb 23, 2009 06:25 PM PSTThank you to Mr. Modiri and to other Iranians and Canadians who assisted you in this effort.
Even though I read here that this was implemented last year, it is the first I hear of it and is news to me. Thank you for posting!
In your opinion, would Iran ever have celebrated (or recognized) its immigrants' culture? Especially one with a very different religion and customs?
Canadians are much more tolerant than Iranians. We can learn from Canada about humanity.
Thank you, Canada, for your humanitarian laws!
hello from Canada
by Benyamin on Mon Feb 23, 2009 05:16 PM PSTYes it is a year old, but it doesn`t take anything away from it as it is news to alot of people!
I am really proud of canada, I have travelled around the world alot and CURRENTLY Canada in my believe is the most civilized country in the world and it is not a big work to make it OFFICIAL in whole of Canada COST TO COST TO COST.
This is great news, but it's
by azadi55 (not verified) on Mon Feb 23, 2009 04:32 PM PSTThis is great news, but it's not recent. I think this video clip is from last year, or maybe the year before that. In any case, I live in Toronto and I'm happy that Mr. Moridi took this to the parliament. We always have public events during norouz and we have different MPs come out to celebrate it with us.
WELL.......
by Majid on Mon Feb 23, 2009 04:01 PM PSTIf 5000 proud Iranians could do it in North Carolina, it can be done everywhere.(Officialy more than half a million in California)
//www.tisfoon.com/iran/governor.gif
All it takes is a group effort from people who have the influence, teamwork attitude, tool, (iranian.com), TV stations, and a leeeetle bit love for motherland.
St. Patrick's day, Cinco de Mayo, MLK day, Black history month.....etc proves that.
Slowly but surely, we'll get there as well.
Congratulations everyone.
Congratulations
by tsion on Mon Feb 23, 2009 03:55 PM PSTNowruz is indeed a very beautiful custom, and its humane and universal message will only enrich any society that embraces it.

Correction
by aaj sr (not verified) on Mon Feb 23, 2009 02:13 PM PSTNoRouz recognized by ONTARIO province, where Dr. Modiri is Member of Parliament for that province, however the ruling is not covering entire Canada. Hopefully we shall have more Iranian/Canadian MPs in other provinces who push for the same accordingly.
Cheers to Ontario and Modiri.

Norouz yes
by Reza Khaneh Mir Five (not verified) on Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:20 AM PSTbut what about his alleged pan-Turkik motives? Norouz was official since 2500 years ago, just because Canada did not want to admit it, doesn't mean anything. What matters is that Iranians, Afghans, Tajiks, Uzbacks and many other celebrate it. What about your Turkik emotions?
Noroozetaan mobaarak! :o)

Merci agha Modiri
This is good news and it
by Anonymous1234 (not verified) on Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:12 AM PSTThis is good news and it shows that canada is a great country and canadians are wonderful people.
don't forget that nowruz is also celebrated in afghanistan tajikestan uzbakestan, kyrgystan, armenia kazakhstan, pakistan and all those members of the greater persia. so canadian action is a nice gesture towards the whole nation of old persia and all the little brother and sister lands
We Are back......Persian rules
by Sialashgar on Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:01 AM PSTThis is a very good news for all persian people around the world

Youppie!!!!!
by Quebeqi on Mon Feb 23, 2009 07:59 AM PSTNow we just have to do the same thing at the Assemblée Nationale du Québec. For the time being, there's a few weeks left before we go celebrate Norouz outside at Place du Canada in Montreal. Omid varam ke hava-e sard va barf barand nabashad. Parce que le Nowrouz dehors à -10C avec du vent arctique et sous deux mètres de neige, c'est rough en motadit!
P.S. Sorry for my strange Persian grammar and syntax. I guess it is as hard as the French one. ;)
Congratulations!
