Iran launches Omid (Hope) satellite carried by Safir-2 rocket

BBC: Iran says it has launched its first domestically made satellite into orbit. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the launch had been successful and that with it Iran had "officially achieved a presence in space". The satellite, carried on a Safir-2 rocket, was meant for telecommunication and research purposes, state TV said. A US state department official said the launch was of "great concern" and could lead to ballistic missile development. Iran insists its intent is peaceful>>>

Congradulations to all Iranians

by Homayun on

Dear friends,

Congradulations to all Iranians, specially to those sicentists that made this possible. This is a wonderful achievment and I am sure this will result in other industries in Iran to flurish too.

My only concern is the reaction of the west. They have always been against an advanced Iran and they certainly will try to undermine Iran this time again.

I wish Iran finds a way to safely manouver itself out.

In my opinion the Jungle rule holds in this world. THe strong will eat the weak. Iran is now like baby trying to stand on his own feet, while there are so many wolfs out there wanting to tear it apart.

So it is this time that we must get even more united people. We can not  afford having a fight amongst ourselves...

My Moto: Be Positive, Optimistic and don't fall in routines

Addressing Mr. D. Kadivar!

by Benyamin (not verified) on

I am both surprised and disappointed in your comment! Although I read alot of your comments and enjoy some of your views, on this issue I disagree with you!
First of all, the way you discribed the WEST is as if they have been flawless in their relations with not only Iran but the whole world!!! you discribed the WESTERN democracy as if it is a crater of civilization, I say hold on to your horses my friend.
The WEST has made so many CRIMES and not MISTAKES in the name of democracy that I don`t even know where to begin, may I remind you of what they did to Dr. Mosadegh? They humeliated him even when he had no power! of course they did it through the Shah`s regeme. But the reality is they wanted to scare everybody else not only in Iran but all around Iran.
The problem with your view is that you think that the mullas are worse that the WEST. And of course the mullahs see that the WEST is worse than them. What is the truth?
The fact is Iran simply send a satelite into orbit. Well, we all know that Iran is a big country in that area and one of the most influencial countries of the world, wether we like the mullahs or not that is merely an internal matter. Becuase, wether Iran has a regeme that is aligned with the west or not she would be a great power so automatically will be engaged in regional disbutes and so on and so forth. Iran is in trouble not because the government of Iran is killing the people and toture them and there is no freedom, after all YOUR beloved WEST ousted a perfectly democratic government and placed it with dictator!!!
Then what is the real reason? it is because Iranian regeme for whatever reason is not aligned with the west`s intrests therefore it is wrong to have nuclear technology, it is wrong to have space technology, it is wrong to kill Iranian people, it is wrong to....well you get my point. So, what realy WEST is not happy about, isnot that the government of Iran kills people or have taken freedom away from people of Iran, the WEST doNOT care about Iranian people and they have proved it and demonstrated it internationally by ousting the democratic govenment and during th war(1980-1988) allowing the goverment of Saddam Hosein to use chemical bombs on Iranians.
If the west really cared about Iranians or anyone in that region, they would have acted differently. So, I hale the Iranians accomplishment since it is their victory not the mullahs, all mullahs know is few Arabic sentences. it is the Iranian youth that have done this and GOOD ON THEM( cheshm e oroopeeha koor)
That is just a persian phrase and I don`t mean disrespect. Lets be happy for our youth and be encouraging and supportive otherwise they would think they have done something wrong? so lets Hale them again and Dariush I want you to join me....lol........lol

I am against another revolution against the Mulla's, because I am afraid of the prospect that people like you will take over iran. Mulla's are kasif and stupid (but they are not like you). This is an achievement for Iran. It is a positive news coming out of Iran and it is indicative of the fact that if Iranians set goals, they can achieve them. It represents Iranian inelegance and ingenuity, so why are you not happy? If US/Obama cared so much about human rights for the people of middle-east he wouldn’t have turned a blind eye, while 1300 innocent people got slaughtered by Israel. If they care so much about the rights of bahais and gay people in Iran, why they don’t have problem with killings of 1300 people and starvation of hundreds of thousands of people in Ghaza. Take your human rights and maybe you can buy a dirty underwear with it.

Kadivar says: "Khejalat Nameekesheed ? "

Kadivar_jAn Like the previous regime IRI can be appreciated for some of its achievements and criticized for its mistakes (many of them). Reza Khan and son made many mistakes, and Shah's dictatorship was even worse than IRI's but it is unfair not to give them credit for many good they (Pahlavies) did.
I am proud of this satellite launch, I am proud of Tehran's metro, ... etc. and I am not ashamed of that.

the pathetic Jealousy

by Roshanbeen (not verified) on

I am short of words to describe the pathetic Jealousy of these people D.Kadivar and company. Get over it guys it is a great achievement like or not. While everyone in the region is talking about working with IRI to achieve peace in region including general petreos and Mike Mullin, your jealousy has blinded you so much that you think they are actually preparing to attack Iran.

I think you sincerely hope you are Right and Why don't you post one more You Tube crowning of Late Shah to show his majesties accomplishments. Yes You are repeating the line from Ahmedinejad that nucs have not saved any regime i.e. soviets and it won't save any other.

RE: Delldar

by Toofantheoncesogreat (not verified) on

Dear delldar

The construction of over 5 different large refineries have started, and by 2012, they have set a goal to export gasoline. 7 years ago they talked about sending their own satellite out in space and people laughed at our technicians and scientists. Now they are crying and whining.

Our GDP is one of the biggest in the world, we rank 1 in science and industry in the middle east (but far behind Israel) and once Obama wears a turban and goes to Qom, every stock you have in teheran stock exchange will quadruple in value. If the sanctions etc are removed, the economy will flourish, but to give away rights for uranium enrichment and satellite technology for it is strategically suicide.

As for how we can send up satellites? Well when our Shariff universities and others are competing with MIT and other foreign Unis, these great minds (that deserve all thanks for such progresses) tend to do miracles with small resources.

Have some pride son. The room is dark, but not that dark..

speaking of bankrupt! (to delldar)

by Anonym7 (not verified) on

Delldar says: "How a country , with bancrupt economy ..."

Delldar_jAn, Iran may be "bancrupt", but not bankrupt. On the other hand U.S, Iceland, Ireland, ..., and several other countries closely connected with U.S banking system are all but bankrupt.
If U.S and Israel stop sabotaging Iranian industries directly and indirectly (sanctions, intimidation of other countries who want to work with Iran, .., etc) Iran will soon catch up with renovation of its oil industry.... and more.

Stop being negative

by Toofantheoncesogreat (not verified) on

Those kids tinkering and fixing that satellite in white, and their co-workers have done more to our nations security and defense than any bozo wannabe Californian Iranian revolutionary on this site ever will, show some gratitude to them, not the mullahs.

Degrading their work and saying it was "foreign bought" is so cheap it makes my stomach hurt.

Defense, science, industry etc has to go forward, wether its a mollah, shah or mossadegh in power. That's the truth, our enemies are gathered around the boarders, they dont care about our people or our progress, only our nations resources and strategical location.

If you dont show teeth, they will bite you like the animals they are.

Congratulations to you all, and to the boys in girls in our Sci tech departments.

New era

by Ajam (not verified) on

As an Iranian I am proud to see my country has become the first developing country to join the seven industrial countries (and India who was assisted by Soviets) that possess satellite launching capabilities. This is just a start. I know because I see and talk to people who are behind these technological advances that put Iran among the top ten in the world (e.g. nuclear, nanoscience, bioengineering...) some of whom were my brother's students at Sharif and Amir Kabir. The significance of this achievement lies in the fact that they did it under Western sanctions and against all odds. It's a pity to see Ahmadinejad take credit for it though!

I remember that 30 some odd years ago the Shah’s biggest industrial achievement was demonstrated in the Aryamehr stadium by assembling a Peykan. Indeed we've come a long way. Congratulations to all true Iranians, not only for this great achievement, but for the 30th anniversary of the Shah's fall into the dust-bin of history!

I know that you're an Iranian lover. It's true that under this regime the success of the Iranian noboogh will not be seen as it should be. Also, true that it's Ahmadunejad who at the first glance is seen to take this victory.

But, Mullahs life is not forever. They will go as all dictators left the stage before them. This is a natural law.

This victory, will not be known as something that Ahmadinejad accomplished. It will be known in the history as, Iran the 8th country in the world, which sent a satellite into orbit.

The ones who take credit for this are not the smart engineers(Even if they are indeed Iranian) but the likes of Ahmadinejad who proclaime to the world the triumph of their Ommatie ideology . It has nothing to do with the glory of Iran but everything to do with helping their message that "Arabo Ommatie occupation is here and stronger than ever " . So cheers to those kids and if it happened under a true Irani regime , I would have been the 1st one to celebrate .

Cheers!!!

Yes, it's great to see a satellite that says "Made In Iran" on the side of it (even though it's probably made with Chinese parts and the muffler from a 1972 Paykan), but unless this satellite will beam these Arabparasts to another galaxy, what's the use?

Darius Kadivar

Suicidal Provocation of Ahmadinejad

by Darius Kadivar on

Don't be surprised if Obama Gives A Green Light to an Attack of Iran's Nuclear Sites in an attempt to intimidate Iran. The result will be catasrophic not just for Iranians but for World Peace in general.

A government that adopts a belllicous vocabulary and slanders international norms of civility and diplomacy as it has been doing so for the past 30 years which took off with the US Embassy takeover and has not evolved an inch from this nihilist behavior will face the consenquences of its Arrogance at the expense of its own people.

This Launch has triggered extremely concerned reactions in Europe and France in particular making it a headline. Why May you ask ? Simply because it raises concerns on the capablity of Iran to lauch long range missles that will not only endanger Israel but also Europe. Whether the intentions of Iran's government are peaceful or not this is irrelevant to outside observers in the aftermath of seeing Ahmadinejad Greet Hamas' Vengeful Leader in Tehran just yesterday.

This is less about a country's legitimacy to sophisticated technology but more about a country whee the lack of transparency and its lack of will to reassure the international community on its own goals.

In the end it will be the People of Iran in their Struggle for Democracy which will be hurt most.

The IRI and Ahmadinejad Dream of such an Attack that will give them the blind support of the population and at the same time will reinforce a regime so strongly at odds with its civil society on nearly all issues.

Ahmadinejad is jeapordizing the future of our country and compatriots by seeking to victimize itself in case of an attack just like Hamas has in Gaza.

If Iran is attacked it will be only the fault of Ahmadinejad and the Islamic Republic Leadership. In their place I would do the same to ensure the victory of their theocracy over the "Corrupt" West. And in the shoes of the American or Israelian Administration I would have nothing to lose either. Destroying the Iranian nuclear sites would raise eyebrows and discontent a little everywhere but the Arab allies won't really protest nor will the Europeans. This is where Ahmadinejad is truly playing with fire if he thinks he is invincible. He would however win on the long term in the face of his public opinion and such an attack will simply lead to muzzling the reformers and any opposition inside Iran. Alas such an Attack will serve the interests of both Israel 's government as well as that of Iran ...

Unfortunately for us I am wary that my generation will ever see a Free and Democratic Iran in my lifetime but a brutal theocratic dictatorship that will resemble more to a new Dynasty where the political system will be similar to that of the Soviet Union in its worst moments. Khamenei can die but the regime will find a successor or turn him like Lenin into some sort of icon and an Islamic Politburo as it already exists today will carry on with the same "Islamic" vision of Iran and overlooking Human Rights abuses as usual as it has in the past 30 years of existance. Actually it is not Ahmadinejad who will be commiting suicide but Iran's civil Society which will be reduced to oblivion. Now some of you can bring about all the well known classic Third World Rhetoric accusing America and the West of Colonialism and compare Ahmadinejad to Mossadegh but it won't change the fact that Iranian Civil Society at Large will be the Real losers in this Grand Bargain amonst Extremist Fundamentalists aimed at ensuring Iran's Military Status and geo strategic interests and Not Reform or Transition towards even an "Islamic Democracy" for the two words I am afraid are truly Incompatible.

Such Nationalistic and major military EGO BOOSTERS Have NEVER LED TO DEMOCRACY in Any Nation's History to date.

If So Name One Dictatorial government that having acquired such technological potentials which ensured its security and military prowness accepted an immediate Transition towards democracy ? The USSR tested its first nuclear weapon in 1949. The Perestroika and Glassnost appeared only 50 to 60 years later.

I sincerely Hope I am wrong ...
