Omid Djalili

Interview about his role as Fagin in "Oliver" and his dreams about Rowan Atkinson!

Daily Telegraph: Even for a man accustomed to pushing back cultural boundaries, Omid Djalili’s new theatrical venture seems a giant step. In a fortnight, this British-born Iranian actor and stand-up comic will take over from Rowan Atkinson as Fagin in Cameron Mackintosh’s record-breaking West End production of the musical Oliver! So here’s someone born to parents from an Islamic republic, playing an archetypal Jewish role, albeit a less than flattering one. Lesser men, one feels, might have gulped and walked away; Djalili cheerfully admits he never foresaw any of this being an issue >>>

Storm in a teacup for publicity

by fozolie on

The nonsense about an Iranian playing Fagin is just that. The Brits are inherently xenophobic so their stupidity in thinking there is a story here and raising their own ignorant stereotypes (AKHMEZ THE MIDDLE EASTERNER CANNOT BE SECULAR), is not in question. Any publicity is good publicity I suppose. Not that it matters but the article does confirm he is a Bahai.

Hmm.. Why is that so strange?

by choghok on

I would think that is as strange playing jew for a muslim as for a christian. And by the way Omid is Bahai if I am not mistaking.
