AFP -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad clashed with reformist rival Mehdi Karroubi in a televised debate Saturday, defending his controversial economic policies and questioning the cleric's integrity. Karroubi himself accused Ahmadinejad of dishonesty after the incumbent president painted a picture of the economy the cleric said was unreal. Hardliner Ahmadinejad, 52, seeking a second four-year term, said Iran's economy had actually grown under his administration, a claim contrary to reports by economists who have blamed him for an economic crisis. In a rare series of debates aired on state television ahead of June 12 poll, he paraded a series of colourful charts claiming Iran's gross domestic product had risen to an annual average of "around 6.25 percent from 5.61 percent in the previous government." >>>

Winston Chruchill!
by GuessWho... (not verified) on Sun Jun 07, 2009 10:45 PM PDTi wonder if Sir Winston Churchill is also turning over in his grave now over Bernie Madoff or better yet the recent scandals in Engliand's politics alike..... Regardless, it's great that people in iran today are far more literate than the era when the monarch's were intoxicating themselves with the crums falling from the Getty or rockefeller families clinched palms gripping Iran's natural resources.

by Barbara (not verified) on Sun Jun 07, 2009 02:20 PM PDTThis is an amazing and unheard process in Iran. The cat is out of the bag for future.
In my opinion Ahmadi-Nejad won the debate however he is wounded by Karoobi. He tried hard to recover and succeeded to a point but not fully.
He does not look presidential nor did Karoobi. Indeed none of the candidates look presidential.
I think Karoobi should withdraw and support one of the other candidates. He had the chance to defend his position but failed to do it.
Ahmadi-Nejad hit back hard like a good snake oil salesman. He offered a few solutions, his view and future plans for the country. Karoobi did not. Not to mention that some is teaching him how to handle himself in front of camera-He looked right into the camera and asked for the votes.
Amazing, it reminds me what Sir Winston Churchill said" too many thieves are stealing from each other but live together like friends in Iran".
Woow. Now Iranians should make the final decision.
Vote. Every vote counts.
I cannot vote and do not support anyone.
Productive debate
by GuessWho... (not verified) on Sun Jun 07, 2009 11:14 AM PDTKarubi plays a very constructive role in developing Ahmadinejad's political career, but he doesn't have what it takes to lead the country and defend it's rights against the advacement of the west.
The theocrats' system of governance is working. Khaminei is the electoral college of Iran, and Rafasanjani's expiedeancy counsel is there to Khaminei in check. That's an effective system of governance to counter against the political gamesmanship of other nations.
Ahmadinejad is a great leader. I doubt he'll ever get a facial to cater to his western audience, but hopefully he'll differentiate Israel from zionism in a more articulate context, and fine tone his style to defuse the politically charged critics' aggressive demonization of his character.
Want to win? Avoid Rafsanjani's Endorsement
by Ali P. on Sun Jun 07, 2009 10:54 AM PDTOne of the flaws of democracy (or democratic process), is that "one man, one vote" concept, one could argue. You can study the candiadates for months, and finally decide on yours, based on carefully and throroughly studying their view, history and plans, and someone else just goes and tosses a coin, and picks his own candidate; and your vote counts as '1', and his counts as '1' ( well, unless you are the Supreme Leader!).
I am not discussing, or commenting on each candidate's agenda here. The point I am trying to make, is that masses- no matter where- vote emotionally. One of the most powerful emotions to sway them one way or the other, is the "sense of assocition".
A few years ago, every grovenor or congressman who was photographed embracing George Bush, lost, no matter how effective (and some were very much so) he was. The rivals kept running their pictures with Bush in their campaign ads.
Poverty, however you define it, is everywhere in Iran, and the poor does not care about foreign policy or free press. They want an anti-rich, anti-corruption, anti-unequality man.
Whoever sleeps on the floor, dresses like them and gives them handout, wins their vote. Rafsanjani is the symbol of wealth and corruption in Iran today, with no one in the ruling class having ever enough balls to challenge him, except for Ahmadinejad.
When it comes to the vote of the poor, being endorsed by Rafsanjani, is just like having been photographed next to George Bush, in 2006:
The Kiss of Death.

by hamsade ghadimi on Sun Jun 07, 2009 06:51 AM PDTif the poor people in iran vote for ahmadinejad, then he would have a landslide victory. poverty is relative: you cannot compare income of iranians to those outside the country. one needs to consider cost and standard of living relative to income of individuals within a country. but for the poor to vote for ahmadinejad, they should also have a case of amnesia as ahmadinejad, in 2005, ran on a platform of anti-corruption and raising the standard of living for the poor. in 2005, he was also running against rafsanjani who symbolizes corruptness and wealth; hence, the motive for ahmadinejad's platform and empty promises. one needs to consider who he will be running against this year, if the poor perceive that they are better off than four years ago, and if votes are legitamately counted.
I wish..
by AArash (not verified) on Sun Jun 07, 2009 04:59 AM PDTif these things Ahmadi-nejad is showing and saying were true, we should really keep him for another term. I wish he wore that lapel pin of Iranian flag over the last 4 years not just when he is cornered and about to lose his office! This was a sick demonstration of opportunism that has marred his 4 years in the office.
I wish he really came clean about all this superstitions regarding "Chaah-e Jamkaran". He claims he is a Scientist and an academic, but his acts and deeds are not based on any Scientific principle.
I wish he stopped fooling people and really acted like an academic and powerful president. Unfortunately, the mass of Iranians are gullible and majority believe in these bullshits and he is playing them the way they want to be played.
My fear is that if any of the other three candidates is elected the plunder of this country will go on, this time with a vengeance! At this stage I'd like to hear more about Rezaei's plans but so far I believe Mahmood should be given another chance.. after all his hands don't seem to be in the tills. Some say he has worked "Ali-vaar" and unlike others has a simple life. For this alone he deserves to be acknowledged!

I would not say Ahmadinejad is for the poors, I would say he is populist who is for making people poor by hand outs. It is very much like the mafia guys giving handouts to be popular but with their own evil agenda.

The Poor for Ahmadinejad
by Ali P. on Sun Jun 07, 2009 12:49 AM PDTThe rich in Iran is not voting for Ahmadinejad, I think.
It seems to me Ahmadinejad is trying to be the poor people's candidate. Those who are sick of watching the corrupt rich getting richer under the previous administrations. I understand this is where most of his support lies.
But what do I know,... I am broke in America, not poor in Iran.
Let's hear from the poor...
Anyone poor from Iran on this site? (well, probably not)
OK, does anyone have any poor relatives in Iran?
Speak up!

Statistics are like Bikini....
by darius45 (not verified) on Sat Jun 06, 2009 08:42 PM PDTI guess Karoubi couldn't have used the expression that statistics are like Bikini, what they cover is more interesting than what they reveal.
Karoubi missed a key point, he should have told Ahamdinejad that the statistics shows failure of his policy, because during his presidency oil was selling up to $140 a barrel. If you adjust for the price of oil, his numbers are either not impressive, or in fact may be negative.

Karoubi
by IRANdokht on Sat Jun 06, 2009 07:02 PM PDTKaroubi seems to be a "nice guy", honest and intelligent. I was proud of him for bringing up Zahra Bani Yaghoob but he didn't finish the sentence to throw a good punch. He brought up Persian Gulf and AN's picture sitting under the Arab Gulf, but it was a black and white picture that didn't quite hit the ball home.
He was less intimated than Mousavi was the other night, but he's too old and goes off on a tangent sometimes.
Ahmadinejad tried to impress people with charts and statistics, he's gone to college afterall... Karoubi was a little too informal.
Ahmadinejad's arrogant, he's very aggressive and lies without even a flinch. Just as he tried to show Mousavi being a Rafsanjani puppet, he implied that Karoubi is pro-American, but I don't think he won the debate.

Jahanshah the debate...
by choghok on Sat Jun 06, 2009 05:39 PM PDTI saw some part of it and I saw peoples reaction on BBC and here. I think Ahmadinejad is very slick he could talk himself out of a death sentence. I keep telling everybody he is the new Hitler just because of that reason. He has that mad look in his face. He keeps telling lies like there is no tomorrow. On top of all he is so into making earth ready for return of the twelfth Imam. I am really worried what would happen if he gets his hand on the nuclear weapon. That is really a reason I think it is our duty to vote him out of office.
