Professor Hakkak is a professor and founding director of the Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute Center for Persian Studies in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Maryland. In this clip he talks about Iranian studies in the U.S. and how it has changed over the past decade, with so many young people and especially women entering the field, as could be seen at the last Iranian Studies Conference in Los Angeles in late May 2010. The hand of the IRI and the foreign language

by Farah Rusta on

In the past, I used to attend events in celebration of French and German cultures in an English speaking country and do you know what the official languages of these events were? French and German, respectively. Now why in a gathering to celebrate one of the world's oldest cultures and languages, Persian, must be English, speaks volumes of the collective sense inferiority the organizers and participants must have felt about their own self. Was this event for the consumption of the English speaking commoners? Were the participants poor in their command of Persian? It is beyond reason.

And now over to my main point. The presence of the hand of the IRI in this event. I don't have time to go through details but guess how many of the academics shown in this clip have been, or still are, recipients of funds, bursaries, grants, fellowships, etc. from the IRI and the IRI-linked institutions? The answer: ALL of them. Obviously.  absence of any qualms about the background of their benefactors is a pre-requisite of being an Iranologist.

Mind you, a study into the Iranian  Mrs Bucket (Keeping Up Appearances), Bouquet, Bouquet! - might be quite interesting
