Even under your highly hypothetical scenario, they have a better chance of survival by not initiating a nuclear attack. These are the same people who bought arms from Israel to fight Iraq to survive. They know history and know what happened o Nazi war criminals after the war. None of them wants his picture on a playing card the same way Saddam and Tariq Aziz and Chemical Ali ended up. Even in the most desperate situation, their chance of survival is greater by simply disappearing rather than initiate an attack which would provoke a nuclear holocaust. Let's just say for the sake of argument that the IRI's leaders are in a position where the regime may be collapsing and they may be at risk of losing their "numerous palaces, expensive cars, foreign bank accounts and profit centers" (and perhaps even their freedom or lives). for the same reason that Saddam , even if he had capability to develop atomic bomb, would never strike first. The top leaders of Iran are not of the martyr type. Each one has numerous palaces, expensive cars, foreign bank accounts and profit centers within Iran. Do you really think they amassed all this wealth and good life  to see it evaporate in front of their eyes for the dubious honor of having nuked couple of hundred thousand jews and couple of million Iranians? I had exactly same argument about Saddam. A man who builds fifteen palaces and grooms his sons to replace him is not a martyr and would not initiate a war that ends in his demise. If only stupid Bush administration understood this , we would be ahead by 200,000 Iraqi and American lives and Gizzilion dollars. But Bolton comes from the same moronic thought process , so no wonder he is so far off. 

Could a secret cabal of Bomb Shelter Manufacturers be

paying these guys ? If Las Vegas would open a line on " War With Iran Starts When ?", it would give a more realistic appraisal than you get from following the Chattering Classes.I like John Bolton, but we need to ask where he's putting his money on  Iran War Line.

anahid, even if all this fear-mongering talk is nonsense, it has an intrinsic value to those who spread it.  as you can see in the interview, the moderator keeps linking the issue of israel/iran/nukes to obama (his main target).  any bad story that you see on cnn website can somehow be linked to obama and that's where the value lies.  of course, others may spread unsubstanitated fear for their own purposes.  iri does it.  israel does it. england does it....

Dear Hamsade, yesterday a friend of mine (not Iranian) asked me when my parents are coming back from Iran and he then proceeded to tell me about what Bolton has said. But I have stopped worrying about this friend and his latest statements of alarm. Reason is that in the five and half yaers that I have known him, countless number of times, he has told me that any day USA or Israel will attack Iran and if my parents are in Iran, they should immediately leave Iran. Go figure.
