Loading begins at Bushehr plant

Facility took 35 years to build

BBC: Iran has begun loading fuel into its first nuclear power station in a ceremony attended by Russian officials. Russia will operate the Bushehr plant in southern Iran, supplying its nuclear fuel and taking away the nuclear waste. Iran has been subject to four rounds of UN sanctions because of its separate, uranium enrichment programme. Experts say that as long as the plant is Russian-operated, there is little immediate threat of its fuel being diverted to make bombs. The Bushehr facility has taken 35 years to build and has been plagued by delays >>>

Real cost: $1000 per kW-h?

by reader1 on

If this reactor had been built under normal circumstances  the cost should have been between  11.1 - 14.5 Cents per kilo watt hour of electricity produced.  I don’t know how much Iranians pay for their electricity,  my guess is probably under one cent/KW-h.  One does not need to be an expert to do a simple calculation to come up with a figure of well over $1000 per kW/H of electricity produced by this reactor. The construction, running and disposal cost are meniscus compared  to the  cost to the economy as a result of international isolation and sanction.  May be that is a price a nation has to pay for being independent of the super powers. I do not know, but I know well that a better result could have achieved if our Mullas had  been blessed with better intelligence and some basic international political brinkmanship.

PS: I could not help but to notice the prominent presence of that Akhond in the picture. I wonder what his contribution has been to the project?. How does he contribute to the productivity?  An elected  politician?  an engineer?  a worker?  a nuclear expert?  Or simply a “Moftkhor”?

what is the big deal

by iamfine on

I am still kind of confused why we are making such a big deal out Bushehr power plant. Other countries (Armenia, Pakistan, India,... ) already have it. I think the difference lies on the fact that our scientist contributed not only to this technology, also in building the power plant components. Probably that makes Iranian to be proud of? - Your thoughts

Thanks

I can’t believe the morons who support this, this is made by foreigners, ran by foreigner’s and control by foreigners, and only people who get heart by it are Iranian people why don’t you call yourself foreigners and get it over. The government ran by Arabs and the economy ran by Russian and Chinas.

Let's face it

by ghalam-doon on

It might be "antiquated nuke technology", "a piece of  junk", "30-40 years old". It might even be a big "aaftaabe" as Nikahang depicted here:

//www.khodnevis.org/persian/permalink/8412.ht...

But let's face it, Islamic Republic of Iran has scored a HUGE point here. Despite all the animosities, all the sanctions, all the threats and all the name callings, they have successfully built their 1st nuclear plant on the Iranian soil.

For now, they have won the game.

Israel didn't dare to attack and destroy it while it was being built. Now it's too late. That shows how vulnerable the Zionist state is. It's all talk and no action. They can only attack defenseless people and even then, they cannot finish the job.

Bibi, go and f..k yourself!

While Israelies are jumping up and down cursing.

"It is totally unacceptable that a country that so blatantly violates (international treaties) should enjoy the fruits of using nuclear energy," Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yossi Levy said in a statement." //www.foxnews.com/world/2010/08/21/israel-iran-nuclear-reactor-totally-unacceptable/

A good step forward

by Bavafa on

Even if it is an outdated technology, or it was built by or with the help of Russians, still it is a step forward and better to have done nothing. So my congratulations to all Iranians with the hopes of more achievements by Iranians and a bigger hope for a free Iran from tyranny.

The economy is dead they even can’t produce fuel for everyday use they import fuel, weapon, food, cloth and ever thing else( I even heard they started importing women from Chain ) so where are they using the energy from this plant?

The only reason I think they need this energy is the hole,Yes, where EZ is hiding

is that a hard aamame, like a hard hat, that akhond is wearing?

Should a war break out with Iran, kiss this plant goodbye. You know, it took 35 years and more than a billion dollar to build this facility, but it will take less than a minute to reduce it to rubble should Iran start a war with Israel, USA, or other neighbors. If Iran was ruled by a peace seeking government, I would say I am so proud of this day, but knowing the record of IRI, I don't care much for this news.

What's the BIG deal? even Pakistan has it

by IranFirst on

Armenia, Pakestan, India,... have all had nuclear power for many years. What's the big deal with Terrorist IRI's propaganda with Archaic Russian technology ? Iran could have had much better than this and much lower (or no) cost  many years ago if the terrorists were not runnong the country (with help from EU and the rest of the civilized world). Let's hope this does not turn into another Russian Chernobyl junk

Pakistan started prucing Nuclear power 10 years ago!

and Bangeladesh is building one by next year.

and IRi is boasting for having one built as if they have gone to the moon

Khatami indicated he was willing to give this away back in 2003- remember?

Credit where credit is due. AN has carried this through. That whole Tehran Declaration/Rushed fourth round of UNSC sanctions/Exemption for Bushehr may have been the final motion that made this a reality.

Whatever the case, Bushehr is starting up! (I can't believe I've lived to see the day)

asadabad

the correct description

by asadabad on

should be, "Russia builds a nuke site in Bushehr and fires it up".  The operation of this site will ebb and flow with American-Russian relations.  Iran does not have the technological know-how to build or operate these facilities.  It took 40 years to build this site!  I predict that when Russia/USA make a deal behind the scenes, this plant will be closed down "due to technical difficulties" just like the s300 fiasco.

Yeah finally, 35 years later, we have a nuclear power plant. Has it been worth it? All the money, taking the country to the brink of war ... there were/are plenty of alternatives. This whole mess is going to be with us for a long time. The crisis is not entirely Iran's fault, but my god... the political mismanagement, the secrecy, the lack of will to give and take... in short: khoda beh dademoon bereseh.

Too big a bite for Israeli IDF to swallow!

by farrad02 on

Attacking Iran, especially in today's war-weary world and the current depressed global economy has proven to be too big a water melon for Israel to swallow!!!

And even if the Israelis somehow find the guts to go through with such an attack, it won't accomplish much!

Unless the ultimate goal of the mission is a regime change, they will actually end up helping the regime and leave it stronger. And the nuclear program will for sure be driven under-ground and speed up its path towards full militarization!

Actually, the Bushehr

by LoverOfLiberty on

Actually, the Bushehr reactors (Type VVER-1000/446) are of a different design than the Chernobyl reactors (Type RBMK-1000).

And, as such, the Bushehr reactors are arguably inherently more safer than the Chernobyl reactors.

I am certain Russia learned a thing or two as a result of the Chernobyl disaster.

and as Ghalam-doon mentioned, it would have been an advanced and safe german design, at much lower  cost (financial and political), already fully operational for dacades if it was not for the terrorist islamists ruling Iran now, just about.

So let the islamists kid themselves and rejoice a bit, frankly they need something to be happy and brag about these days with all the sanctions thing.

It could be German designed

More than 20 years ago they asked Germany to build the nuclear reactor for them. But Germany was under pressure not to get involved. So it could be German designed instead of outdated Russian designed.
