mardom mazloom & Escape
by masoudA on Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:29 AM PDTwell said both of you
MM - the same thing pretty much applies to Reza Aslan.
Escape - One look at many Euro countries like England and France would justify all Islamophobia - even amongst many of us who are Moslem by birth hence Islam's biggest victims.
Y islamists don't go move back 2 their islamic paradise - IRI?
by Mardom Mazloom on Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:15 AM PDTBecause they don't know how to pray (or taharat beguirand) after drinking their European or US beer and that they mostly don't know how to read and write Farsi. A real handicap in sum!

I don't know why you people don't go move back to the islamic paradise you have created? what's the attraction in here? what the whore houses are better in here? or the opium is cheaper here?
There is a good reason for Islamophobia isn't there?

He introduces himself as a "Muslim Amercian"
by Simorgh555 on Thu Aug 26, 2010 10:21 AM PDTHe introduces himself as a "Muslim Amercian" rather thn Iranian. He hen spends more time discussing issues of concern regarding muslims but apparently very little of his work actually focuses on Iran and the persecution of religious minorities in Iran. If he cares so much about Muslims maybe he would do his Islamic brothers a great service by spending less time berating Newt Gingrich but asking why the Sunni and Arab population of Iran that are oppressed by the Shia hegemony.
Maybe there is institutionalised racism against Muslims. Maybe not. But the fact of the matter is there are more muslims killing muslims through sectarian violence in Muslim countries than any where else in the world. Maybe Muslim countries can set an example so Amercians can follow.
One final point for Reza, if he cares to read this: If the Islamic Republic allows a Sunni Mosque or even a Synagogue with their religious iconoclasms in full view within two blocks of the Imam Khomeini's (May he rot in Hell) mausoleum in Tehran, I will personally come to New York and campaign for this wretched Islamic centre to be built.

Republican National Committee Slashes New York Muslim Cabbie
It wasn’t the 21-year-old Michael Enright who drunkenly slashed his New York city cab driver after asking ‘Are you Muslim?’
It was the Republican National Committee. From August of 2006, the RNC decided to demonize Muslims and Islam as a campaign ploy, to scare apparently easily spooked white Christians. In recent weeks, Newt Gingrich sharpened the blade by comparing Muslims to Nazis. Gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio asked if the Sunni Kuwaiti Sufi Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who is on a good will mission to the Muslim world on behalf of the US State Department and was deployed in the same way by George W. Bush, is a terrorist in the employ of Shiite Iran.
The slasher was apparently “very drunk,” but what does being drunk do to a person? Makes them suggestible, lets primal emotions come to the fore. Newt Gingrich and Rick Lazio may as well have kept Enwright in their basements in chains and whipped him into a frenzy as to spew their hatred on the airwaves.
I don’t understand why Abdul Rauf doesn’t sue for libel (that was how the early 20th century Jewish community got industrialist Henry Ford to back off his similar campaign of ethnic vilification in the 1920s; unfortunately Jewish groups like CAMERA and the David Project are now actively involved in promoting anti-Muslimism, i.e. have sided with Ford this time.)
I have said for some time that the American Right’s scapegoating of ordinary American Muslims– Muslims who serve in the US military, die for our country, invest in our cities, find cures for diseases, save our children’s lives in hospitals– would eventually cause pogroms and get people killed. A New York cabbie came close to dying for the sake of the G.O.P. Tuesday night.
Shame on you, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Lazio, and Sarah Palin, and all the other hatemongers. You have blood on your hands, and will have more if you go on this way.

by masoudA on Thu Aug 26, 2010 08:43 AM PDTNeither I, nor any of the members here have been living under a rock. In fact we look at things with far more insight than a 20 year old kid like you drunk with dubious notoriety.
I know full well how creatures like you are made, how your books are written, how they get published and how creatures like you end-up getting exposure to push certain political agenda!!!! The only thing I wonder about now is who unplugged you and how? Was your agenda of pushing for more Islamic influence in USA too hot for CNN and Jon Stewart?

by Roya365 on Thu Aug 26, 2010 07:58 AM PDTRamin118,
Your comments are very prejudiced, uneducated, and definitely without any foundation. The way you are thinking is the same way the current regime in Iran is thinking. They pillage because they are right and everybody else is a traitor, or a whore.
If you take some time to educate yourself, maybe you can expand your horizon:
-In your research you might notice that not only Islam, but in all religions crime, murder, and pillaging of countries have happened under the guise of religion. Christianity has definitely made a name for itself in that regard. If you can read, then try reading about The Crusades, Witch hunts, Bloody Mary.
-Google: Occupied Palestine and read about the Arab/Jewish disputes, the Gaza Strip, the nation of Israel. Then maybe you will come to a PBS documentary that shows the Jews and Moslems living in harmony in that region until brilliant minds came up with the idea of promised land and establishing a nation called Israel.
-There is nothing wrong with godliness, and the religious disciplines that the religions are offering. The problem lies within power, wealth, and greed.
If you finish your reading and decided to still be an Anti-Islamist then, be one. After all if there are no people haters, and prejudice like the one you hold, where would our next bunch of fanatics come from?
Tabriz, Where is your
by Sargord Pirouz on Thu Aug 26, 2010 07:51 AM PDTTabriz,
Where is your difference with me on Ahmadinejad? I didn't vote for him. For two reasons, one I thought it would be more politically palatable for US rapprochement efforts (gotta admit, I was naive to think Obama was sincere) and I'm not a big fan of Ahmadinejad's management of the economy.
But that said, I accept Dr. Ahmadinejad as president.
I have to say, Reza's commentary surprised me. His recent negative remarks toward Islamic scholarship, as well as aryan phenotypical relevence gave me the impression that he was anti-Islamic based on a pre-Islamic preference. But here he is stating he is a muslim. Go figure.

Cancer
by Ferfereh on Thu Aug 26, 2010 06:24 AM PDTIslam is cancer and for our country the only way is surgery. This Idiology with its pedophile leader has brought misery to whole world from day one. Read Koran and you'll find out that besides some stories that you can find in Bible and Torah (or Torat), it just talks about how and who to kill, who Mohammad should sleep with, sacrificing everything even humanity to Allah, .... and it is the only religion that has death punishment for apostasy, it means you can check in, but for checking out you will be in coffin.

by Sargord Pirouz on Thu Aug 26, 2010 06:22 AM PDTBeen a while since I've heard some intelligent commentary out of Reza Aslan.
His points are valid.
To answer his question, I'm thinking (hoping) that there won't be a radicalization in the US, as a result of this "mainstreaming" of anti-Islam political discourse, mainly for the reason Aslan brings up: the relative wealth and higher education of the American muslim community, especially as that contrasts with the European experience.
What is exacerbating this are the ongoing US wars in muslim lands, against muslim combatants. Only after peace is achieved, by one way or the other, can these conditions recede. I'm remembering the experiences of Japanese and Vietnamese Americans, during and after US wars in Asia. Of course, in the contemporary case involving muslims, settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict as well as US-Iran detente (better still, rapprochement) are most likely prerequisites for this process to take hold. Which severely complicates the issue, as the media and powerful lobbies are attached to to a foreign belligerent, with its own foreign interest taking precedence over all else, including those of the US in certain respects. Which seems to mean muslims in the US will be subjected to this kind of thing for the foreseeable future. which is regrettable.
