Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty: Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has criticized the trial of a controversial Iranian blogger, RFE/RL's Radio Farda reports. The trial of Hossein Derakhshan, known as the "Blogfather" for helping to popularize blogging in Iran, began on June 23. RSF spokesman Reza Mooeni told RFE/RL on June 24 that Derakhshan faces charges of "conspiracy" and "acting against national security." But he said the "true nature of the charges" against Derakhshan remain unclear.... Mooeni said Derakhshan's lawyer has not had access to his client, which he said is common with Iranian lawyers who defend journalists and bloggers >>>
This is a clip from the 1980's when Derakhshan appeared on a children's program:

by Abbas Zeineddin on Wed Jul 07, 2010 11:14 AM PDTI loved this show and all of the ones you mentioned plus Madreseye Moosha. I think it was "Bell" o Sebastian, the one with the St. Bernard dog. Anyway, Hossein does look cute. And DK is right. Freedom of expression does have its price.
Survival the most important duty of writers
by eroonman on Wed Jul 07, 2010 11:19 AM PDTWriters who dissent and disagree with a system that has so many flaws and shortcomings as the IRI has foisted, must foremost preserve their ability to continue to write and speak out against tyranny.
Anyone can get caught, be tried, and summarily executed with little
impact and disappear into history. Tyranny actually prefers that. Only when tyranny can't catch you does it dig itself into a deeper and deeper hole and eventually buries itself.
While we all remember Golehsorkhi's courageous trial, in the end what did it accomplish? For sure, he gets to be an immortal hero, but look where we are today?
Exactly! No, better to sneak around and snipe at oppression, then to stand up to it in a rigged court, to flicker brilliantly and be snuffed out.
Unfortunately Derakhshan means "Bright" so it's not looking good so far...
Agree with DK
by statira on Wed Jul 07, 2010 10:49 AM PDTIC needs to make an official petition to release Darakhshan. We need to take the case to CNN just like the case for Sakineh Ashtiani.
I wonder why our activists just tear their throat for the people who committed some type of a crime and not for the freedom lovers. If we had put hands together in any possible way, we could have prevented the executions of the kurdish activists.
Real McCoy
by Fatollah on Wed Jul 07, 2010 05:18 AM PDTa short stay in IRI dungeons will make you sing like a Canary.
Nevertheless, Hossein D. alongside with all political prisoners must be released ...
If there is any official petition I will sign it ...
by Darius Kadivar on Wed Jul 07, 2010 03:16 AM PDTAnyone who writes or comments on IRanian.com should feel concerned !
Regardless of his opinions what is happening to Hossein could have happened to us !
A Reminder to us all that Freedom of Expression has a Price !
Cute, or collaborator?
by Real McCoy on Tue Jul 06, 2010 07:01 PM PDTI'd hold on to my cute this, cute that until I hear what he would say at his trial.
Needless to say, he should have never been jailed in the first place.
So cute!
by statira on Tue Jul 06, 2010 06:43 PM PDTHe was and still is!

by yolanda on Tue Jul 06, 2010 06:37 PM PDTHis facial features have not changed much! I hope he will be released soon! Thank IC for posting the video and raising the awareness to the ordeal of this bright young man!
I hated this show. And so
by TheMrs on Tue Jul 06, 2010 06:33 PM PDTI hated this show. And so did all my friends. It was considered a loser show. The better ones where khaanevaadeyeh doktor ernest, bach o sebastian, profosor baltazar or even mohajeran. But none of us would be caught dead watching this.
But the little hossein is pretty cute. Back then no one ever thought about blogging.
He looks bright, energetic and "sheitoon".
by fooladi on Tue Jul 06, 2010 05:07 PM PDTThe kind of Kid any nation would be proud of. The kind of kid islamists hate and put in jail, torture, rape and hang. The bastards are just against humanity and any form of human intelligence and creativity, period.
