I agree
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Mon Jun 21, 2010 02:53 PM PDTwith both Mehrdad and COP.
I don't like IRI but that does not make me a right winger. In fact the radical right in USA was in bed with the Mullahs from Reagan on. Evil attracts its own kind.
Another rare case that I find myself in agreement with COP
by Bavafa on Mon Jun 21, 2010 02:32 PM PDTYou are right on this time.

Brother Zakaria's vocabulary
by خلفای راشدین on Mon Jun 21, 2010 02:39 PM PDTInsha'Allah, he is using the Democrat's coded language. Last time it was the Guadeloupe thing, and this time will be the upcoming G8 Summit in Toronto, which is ironically one of the holy cities in Shia Islam.

Not to get political here
by Cost-of-Progress on Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:43 PM PDTbut the nutcase right wing party was at the helm for 8 years and they did not do jacksh*t other than emboldening the mullahs. So pahleez. If Mccain was prez, the voodoo queen Palin would be having an orgee with the BP a$$wipes instead of making them pay.
Nobody cares for Iran other than Iranians, and even us, as evident by this site, are far from being united.
Just imagine Joe Barton having a bigger mouthpiece....what a douche...

Well I was in Iran only last week and never got arrested.
So what's your point???

by MOOSIRvaPIAZ on Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:22 PM PDTits hilarious as most of them have never set foot in iran for years. He was in Iran LAST YEAR and arrested for months!
Wake up iranians! az khabe khosh biaayn biroon.
zakaria is on crack....
by shushtari on Mon Jun 21, 2010 10:55 AM PDTI used to watch his show....but not anymore!!!
he's joined the rest of the appeasers......IT IS A FACT THAT KHAYENEI'S PLANE WAS READY TO LEAVE DURING THE ASHURA PROTESTS!!!!
IN FACT THE AKHOONDS KNOW FULL WELL THAT THEY ARE A STEP AWAY FROM BEING OVERTHROWN!!!
THIS IS ALL VERIFIED BY TOP PASDARAN DESERTERS WHO STATE THAT ALMOST 40% OF THE PASDARS ARE AGAINST THE AKHOONDS
obama, just like carter and the rest of the looney lefties have a way of appeasing and nurturing thugs and rogue regimes
if mccaine was president iran would very likely be rid of the akhoonds right now
I disagree with Farid and his body Maziar.
by free vs islam on Mon Jun 21, 2010 10:12 AM PDTWhat is farid talking about? Maziar has no idea what is happening in Iran and I was in Iran last year about a month after election and I was at Tehran and north west of Iran and I was talking to all type of people and believe in me I was talking with poor and middle class people and all they want regime change and I have family there and I know a lot of people who even in villages they are not happy with regime and when was last time Mazir Bahari has spoken with farmers or the factory workers and labours to know how they feel and assure you that all these people are against regime and they hate the khamenie and ahamghinejad and rest of the Islamic cronies. But these people don’t want to follow Mousavi or Karobi because these are not the leaders that Iranian wants to follow.
Regarding bombing Iran, I agree that would be great gift to regime and just like Iran and Iraq war.
I agree with DK, maziar Bahari should educate himself and he should not make a false comments, he has obligation as a journalist bring the fact on the table not the high prophecy.
After 31 years in power...
by Irani Irani on Mon Jun 21, 2010 09:47 AM PDTThe 31-year point for Mohammad Reza Pahlavi would have been in 1972 (he assumed the throne in 1941). Who in 1972 could have foreseen the fall of the Shah 7 years later? If there were such people, they were few in number. Just think how "stable" the Shah's rule appeared in 1972. At that time, the price of oil was still low and hadn't experienced the price rise of 1973, with all the good and bad things that brought to Iran. Now, of course, the Islamist savages have done everything possible to prevent a repeat of 1979 and have insinuated themselves into every aspect of society (labor unions, universities, online cyber propaganda, etc). And, of course, their savagery is not even remotely comparable to the Shah's dictatorship (just look at the number of people they executed in the first few years after taking power and compare that to the number executed in the 38 years the Shah ruled--not to mention their penchant for stoning people to death, chopping off limbs, and flogging as sanctioned punishments for adultery, having sex, stealing, etc). Savage dictatorships can remain in power for a long time (look at North Korea, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, etc). They have all the weapons and money. and a hard-core of bloodthirsty thugs-for-hire who will not get off the oil and natural gas money Gravy Train at any cost. That is, unless, they are physically forced from power, which will likely require U.S. assistance to help even the IRI's money and weapons playing field a little. There is no other way. The Islamists have proven themselves impervious to meaningful reform. If you think regime change is a pipe dream, then reforming the IRI in any substantial way is an even bigger pipe dream (the "reformists" held power from 1981-2005, and those sure were "reforming" years, weren't they?). If regime change is not made the goal and then pursued in a vigorous manner, then there is no chance for any fundamental improvement in Iran in the next 100 years.
Fareed is spot on.
by MOOSIRvaPIAZ on Mon Jun 21, 2010 09:12 AM PDTAnyone saying otherwise needs to spend some time in Iran and ask the ordinary iranians (no, your family members dont count).
do I want regime change? you bet. is it possible any time soon? no.
With a very complex situation in Iran
by Bavafa on Mon Jun 21, 2010 09:05 AM PDTIt is hardly any surprise to see different opinion and disagreements with Zakaria analysis here. However the one part that I think most will agree on is that any bombing of Iran would be a gift given to the IRI and how short sided and wrong McCain is on the Iranian issue.
Mehrdad
Farid must make sure this is broadcasted to Iran
by fooladi on Mon Jun 21, 2010 08:32 AM PDTThen people will realise how wrong they were about the regime, stop demosntrating and plotting against it and all live happily ever after. This is no time for revolution, or regime change....
After all Mazia agha said so!
How About Economy "Stupid"?
by ghalam-doon on Mon Jun 21, 2010 08:17 AM PDTEconomy brought down the Shah and if things go as they've been going for the past several years, the regime will lose its base among the poor and religious folks.
It's not just religion, nationalism and democracy, it's the economy stupid!
I think this guy has a bone to pick with McCain and that's the reason he has come up with this "eye-opening" commentary. One might not like McCain foreign policy agenda but it does not mean putting him in the same category as neocons.

Good to see you finally in person, NO FEAR jan.

If it was not a mistake to stand up against the regime, while holding a camera in one hand, it will be definitely a grave mistake now to sit idle in front of this TV.

Agree and disagree
by choghok on Mon Jun 21, 2010 02:57 AM PDTI agree that any meddling in Irans internal affairs from outside politicians would make matters worse since Ahmaghinejad and his followers like Khamenei would then call the green movements for foreign spies. Attacking Iran would be then worse.
But for him to state that Ahmaghinejad and his followers would have the support of the people in rural area or Khamenei would be popular I would disagree. How do we know or can measure it?
If a guys calls me right now and asking me if I support Ahmadinejad or not I would be hesitant to say no, what about a person living in Iran and who feels much more in danger.
Journalism
by Ferfereh on Mon Jun 21, 2010 08:32 AM PDTIs this journalism or chit chating with my grandma? the healt care and social programs infrastructure founded in Shah's regime and if this regime hasn't already destroyed it, because the most poor people are depending on it and the regime don't dare to touch these. When you talk about Mullahs regime nationalism it is obvious that you have long long way to go to be a journalist. About Maziar Bahari, I agree with Dariush and I think he should change his job because a journalist digs things up, not assumes things and not gathers information from regime's sources. In this time, the only one that will be glad of a war, is Mullahs.
I disagree ... as for Maziar Bahari he has no credibility

I don't support the West Bombing My Country but I DO SUPPORT THEIR SUPPORT of the Green Movement towards Regime Change.
Maziar Bahari is a Naive Journalist at best with absolutely No Insight into Iranian Political realities.
To claim Khamenei is the Most Popular Iranian today is Ridiculous to Say the least.
This is a Journalist who Got it ALL WRONG From Day One.
I am sorry he got arrested and used as a hostage by IRan to Pressure the United States in meddling in Iran but Maziar Bahari like many other "Iran Experts" infatuated with the Khatami Reformist Years is simply Too Out of Touch with what has happened to Iran in the past 30 years.
This Regime has Stepped on EVERYTHING Iranians Stand for from it's National Flag it has replaced with an ARAB SICKLE to Wiping the names of Poets like Forought Farrokhzad to Ferdowsi out of School books you name it ...
It is a Regime that is UN IRANIAN by nature.
To claim That it has a Popular Support inside the country is one thing but to Claim that the Regime is a Nationalist One is an Absurd Statement.
In the same way he drew Absurd Stereotype Parrallels between Khamenei and the Shah in his latest Newsweek Article:
The Last Ayatollah by Maziar Bahari (Newsweek)
Beyond the Green Movement which needs to be supported subtly Iranians have TWO things on their Side which needs to be encouraged ( including with resorting to Anti IRI Propaganda if needed very much like when the BBC helped the French Resistance of De Gaulle ):
A Thirst for Democracy AND Nationalism !
Otherwise Why would they shout Nah Gazeh, Nah Lobnan Janam Fedayeh IRan ?
Zakaria Are You chickening Out Already simply because the Russians won't allow the Sanctions to Work efficiently ?
Russia Criticizes Iran Sanctions ( BBC)
Well I have News for You ... Iranians will Overcome EVEN WITHOUT YOUR HELP even Without YOUR Sanctions!
Because We are Far More Nationalistic than the Bunch of Traitors Running our Country today !
Maziar and the other IRANICAN Journalists a La Mode Better Get this Fact in Their THICK HEADS Sooner or Later ...
LASTLY:
I Was, Am and Will Be for REGIME CHANGE !
And the Last Thing that Can Change that Ultimate Goal and Genuine Conviction is a Wannabee CNN "Iran Expert" Analyst called Maziar Bahari who seems to have discovered his nation's century old struggle for democracy and National Independance in some High School history textbook ...
A Bon Entendeur Salut !
