Karroubi: IRI being ruined

"They have ruined the republic side of the regime in the name of Islam"

AFP -- Opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi said that Iran's Islamic regime was being ruined, after he faced the fury of hardliners when he appeared at the shrine of late revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, reports said. Fars news agency reported late Thursday that Karroubi reached the shrine in south Tehran to pay homage on the 21st death anniversary of Khomeini which falls on Friday. But the report said hardliners heckled him and shouted slogans "Death to Hypocrites!" and "We are not people of Kufa to leave Ali alone!" after which Karroubi's bodyguards took him away from the mausoleum. Karroubi, who along with Mir Hossein Mousavi is spearheading the opposition movement in Iran, later said on his website Sahamnews that the country's Islamic regime was being ruined >>>

You lost the election, go away gracefully

It's really embarassing to see someone being so desperate for power.

Prophet...

Certainly we had short comings in leaders. I remember it well. If Khomeini pissed, fifty people more intelligent than him would line up to slurp it up. We created a cult of personality around this guy. Cults of personality are dangerous like the way that the North Korean government is ran.

But above all, I think the problem is in all of us. There are exceptions of course. I don't want to paint all Iranians with the same brush. But, practically every one of us is a mini-IRI in some way. The worst characteristics of IRI are systemic flaws of our community. And,until we fix that, IRI (or something like it) is here to stay. Iranians, en masse need to change direction.

There were reasons for the revolution that is obvious. But it was doomed from inception. You have said religion and republic don't mix. In addition the leadership of the revolution were incompetent (Nationalist/Bazargan) or evil (Islamist/Khomeini) or both (MKO/Rajavi).

I love the way you described it. it is exactly like that. The man is searching for another bottle of vodka and perhaps few other drunks to join him.

Internal Conflict...

by bughzan on

The IRI has failed because of an internal conflict. It's an oxymoron. You see the Republic part does not mix with the Islamic part. In some aspects, they are the antithesis of each other. This is not to pick on Islam. It's religion and republic that don't mix. US is also failing, in part because it has become the Christian Republic. It's an irony that these two foes, US and IRI, don't see it.

Let's be fair. The revolution had good cause. To say otherwise is to be disingenuous. We Iranians just did not have the strength to keep it and grow it into a working democracy. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that we have moved along much!

Revolution & people who remember it fondly

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on

The beginning days of the revolution were the "high" of getting drunk. People were busy "arbade keshi" and taking hostages. The rest is like waking up with a hangover and seeing your house trashed. All the glasses and plates are broken. There is vomit all over the place. And a bunch of snoring drunks on the floor. That is the REAL part of the revolution. Those who want the erly parts are just asking for another bottle of vodka. That is all. The worst thing is to give them one.

Great, The islamic "republic"

Is collapsing from within, and that is only good for the Iranian Nation.

He is not a hypocrite

by shahabshahab on

It's easy to litsen to Karrroubi's praises of Khomeinin and conclude that he is a hypocrite. But he is saying all these for domestic consumption. There is still a large segment of Iranian society who look back to the early days of the revoluton as the "good old days" They think the Imam was like a hero, even a saint.

Karroubi is catering to that crowd. He is a very shrewd politician, who can rally support from many corners. His suport of the Imam is a show, I suppose to appeal to the idiots who believed in the Imam.

the so called hard liers are right! The guy is Hypocrite. You can't have it both way, either you are for IRI or you are not, the rest of it is mumbo jumbo. There is no point going from one bad version of IRI to another supposedly reformed version of IRI.
