even though i support the establishment, the manner in which greens were/are treated is far from being fair.  if what this student who did not even curse is called disruptive, what do you call it when hooligans interrupted khatami speech in jamaran

why doesnt iri give greens one day a permit to organize legal protest to understand how popular or unpopular they are

khamenie is acting no different than king abdulla of SA who clamps down on shiites in eastern arabia whenever they call for their rights.

I witnessed the pre & post election aftermath.  Pre-election was such a joyous event, everyone was having fun.  Post election, it seems that a wave of dispair and depression griped the nation.

There were unjustified clear cut violations:

1. Khamenie ratifying results before Guardian Council could verify the final count after compaints were lodged.

2. no permits issued for opposition before any violence had even taken place

3. if final count was indeed in Ahmadinejad's favor, Iran could have asked the Organization of Islamic countries to do a recount, thus giving much needed weight to that organization which by the way Iran says should hold a seat at the UN Security Council

4 if you have nothing to hide, why not do a recount.  Guardian Council offered a recount of 10 % of the votes.  That atleast in my mind, made it look like they could cook up and tamper with 4 million votes in a matter of days.  However, cooking up 40 million votes would have been enormous, especially since they broke down the percentages along cities and towns.  It would have been an enormous task for the interior ministry to do that but they figured they have the man power to do it to 4 million votes.

Since the government counted the votes - 40 million- in just under 24 hours, had the government offered a full recount, people would have expected just as speedy of a recount.  But the government was unable to produce 40 million tampered votes for recount.  They had only worked on some 4 million votes.

If Khamenie's argument is that a full recount is not feasible because then it would become a habit for the losers to demand a recount in future elections everytime they lose, then it is a poor argument.  Why? because the opposition did not demand a full recount in the previous election.  Opposition accepted the results because Ahmadinejad was able to triumph over Rafsanjani.  Ahmadinejad was seen as the corrupt free guy vs corrupt Rafsanjani and opposition accepted the count .

Where is Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) when you need him to define  OPINION.

Before passing  judgment, it is advisable to walk a mile in a country under neocolonial chokehold by reading a contemporary history book.  Your opinion about Iranians seems as uninformed as it is about blacks.  Your comments are particularly disturbing as your name hints of Hispanic heritage, raising expectations of your understanding of the ways of the first world and the third world interdependencies.

What the hell was a rep of IRI doing there? They should fear leaving Iran

Raoul1955

Here we go with these people

by Raoul1955 on

Iranians are very much like our black folks based on the following observations:

1) They are always complaining about issues that they themselves have created and continue to create, but blame others for the consequences of their own decisions and actions;

2) They expect others to come to their ‘rescue;’

3) They fail to follow decorum;

4) They lay claim to having had a fantastic ancient civilization, but somehow got destroyed because… And when asked what they have to offer now other than the 7th century Arabic culture, they become mum and refer to the 1) above;

5) Each one of them thinks that he or she is an expert in everything, but claims to have been held back in progress due to some mysteriously crafted conspiracy by the Western powers, and finally;

6) They fail to pause and contemplate a rational approach to their own problems rather than causing a scene across the globe like little babies.For example, they fail to see one possible consequence of toppling the current regime, that being a full scale civil war in Iran, not unlike that which destroyed Lebanon.

Iranians can easily replace our urban black people with the above listed characteristics.

Green ppl have no respect for the rights of others

by amgw4 on

They always want to advance their agenda by violating other people's rights. Whether it's riots/fires or simply not allowing a class to listen to a speaker. It's as if no one else exists. What a truly despicable group.

The Ironic part....

by ahvazi on

a representative of AN's govt. would not have the balls to address a class in Tehran University. Now they come to a class-room in Columbia Univ.. and just BS the American students. I am glad there was a courageous Iranian who stood up to this criminal.

Courageous young man

I admire him because his protest is spontaneous & from the heart.

Brave young man.  His emotions and moral conscious couldn't keep him quiet....

whereas others protest to show they are COOL, ANTI ESTABLISHMENT, CHANT MEANINGLESS SLOGANS, ACT SILLY, & simply put , put on a show then off they go back to work living their normal lives.

Where was Agha DOKTOR Hamid Dabashi to Protest ?

by Darius Kadivar on

Oh RIght Maybe he was speaking about Palestinian Issues at another Conference on Columbia with his fellow friend George Galloway ...

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkgMBqJ3deY&feature=player_embedded

LOL

Or with Leverette ( whom he has ONLY recently criticized after tons of critics were directed towards this so called Iran expert for his lack of support for the Iranian Green Protestors whom Dabashi sees himself as the self proclaimed spokesperson on the US Campus and on the BBC Persian Service) claiming Iranians don't want to overthrow the regime:
