Bay Area Reporter: What's funny about being from a country whose dictator denies you even exist?
For gay Iranian-American comic Mehran Khaghani, humor is the best weapon. He'll be performing in There Are No Gays in Iran in San Francisco at Café du Nord, Friday, March 12, with straight comics Amir Malekpour, Tissa Hami and Max Amini, who each dispel myths and muses about their culture through humor.
So, Khaghani is asked, what is funny about dictatorial oppression?
"Well, there's dick, first."
Khaghani has a few nicknames for Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who publicly declared that Iran has no homosexuals. A favorite: Napoleon II: Electric Boogaloo.
"He's basically a midget who's getting away with it," Khaghani said. "He's gotten in bed with the right people; he's essentially blown the status quo to get where he is. This guy isn't some revolutionary thinker, but smaller. He's like a fifth-generation asshole, donning Men's Wearhouse jackets so he can seem like a man of the people." >>>

I am not surprised he is gay! Finally one good looking irani!
by obama on Sat Mar 13, 2010 06:48 PM PSTI thought when i saw the picture! Must have guessed he should be one! why is it that all the good looking ones are? well not all, most. He would be happier in Ghazvin or Esfehan who areally appreciate beauty.
First, it was said that there were no gays in Iran, not outside! second, it really is not courageous, as someone said, to come out! What is so courageous about coming out in San Fransisco? It wasn't in Kentucky, or Dallas! In fact, I call it SMART! Ahamadinejad gave people like him the best gift! He actually is making money off the sympathisers in San Fransisco. Good for him!
Third, we don't have gays in Iran! Only cooney va coon-con!
You're fabulous, Mehran
by sima on Sat Mar 13, 2010 10:55 AM PSTWhat a talented and terrific guy. And thanks for that little private pasoor improv! I'm still cracking up.
A superb entertainer
by Nazy Kaviani on Sat Mar 13, 2010 09:16 AM PSTOh My God, Mehran is so funny! He had that audience wrapped around his little finger last night! It was really wonderful to meet Mehran in person and to watch him perform live. It was a very good show with so many brilliant Iranian comedians.
I went to see Mehran after the show. I had to wait in a long line of fans to talk to him. As I waited for my turn, I couldn't help but hear the people ahead of me talk to him. At least three of them were gay Iranian men who were talking to him about his skits, identifying with so much of what he had said earlier on stage. As they were talking, though, I observed that none of them were laughing, not even Mehran. This was all serious.
I have always known that being gay and coming out is not easy for anyone; my friends have told me their stories. But as I was standing there listening to these men talk about their experiences I was reminded yet again of how absolutely frightening it must be for an Iranian to have to face family and friends first, and then the society and the world with news about his or her homosexuality. It does take a very courageous individual to tell others about it with self confidence and the deserved right to be and to be accepted and respected.
I want to thank Mehran for giving me a chance to leave that performance hall with a bit more thought and awareness than I had entered it. A great show with a powerful message--yes, there are gays in Iran and there are Iranian gays elsewhere, too, and if only we would turn off the noise of prejudice and ignorance in our minds, we can hear their beautiful voices and allow them to teach us a thing or two about humanity.
midget is a derogatory term, like kooney
by amgw4 on Sat Mar 13, 2010 02:28 AM PSTdon't say kooney or midget
