Guardian: ABC News is reporting that Shahram Amiri, a young Iranian nuclear scientist who went missing while on a pilgrimage to Mecca in late May or early June last year, is now living in the US having been seduced by US intelligence. According to the people briefed on the intelligence operation, Amiri's disappearance was part of a long-planned CIA operation to get him to defect. The CIA reportedly approached the scientist in Iran through an intermediary who made an offer of resettlement on behalf of the United States. Last October, Iran accused the US of seizing Amiri, an expert on radioactive isotopes at Malek Ashtar University, with Saudi connivance. His disappearance was widely seen as part of a CIA-led "Brain Drain" operation launched in 2005, aimed at luring Iran's nuclear talent out of the country >>>

INTERNAL vs EXTERNAL
by Demo on Wed Mar 31, 2010 04:35 PM PDTIs not this another scheme (“MAKR”) by IRI Intelligence Services to divert the people’s attention away from the ever increasing “internal” issues & make all those “external”? After all CIA is now to be blamed for the recent massive unrest, the Kahrizak’s prison killings & tortures, Saeed Mortazavi’s high crimes & his schizophrenia, elections frauds, Mohammed Ali Masoudi (another Iranian Physicist) assassination and etc.
Did not IRI do the same by dragging the war with the neighboring country Iraq for 8 years to solidify its own shaky internal power?
Note also that some years ago Mohsen Rezai’s son & Khomeini’s grandson were granted US asylum upon their cooperation with CIA. They are now both back in IRAN. One is running a very profitable business & the other one is under special Khamenei’s care.
why should I believe anyone
by Fatollah on Wed Mar 31, 2010 01:23 PM PDTin my book, US has no credibilty after Iraq invasion. well, at the other hand, the Mullahs are sneaky bastards! He was kidnapped for all I know!
Ghaffari, yes, why not! and why not seek residence anywhere in Tehran, your choice of pick for all I care, while surgical attcaks happen! your vote doesn't count ...
Stop using innocent iranians in political game

I feel sorry for this guy. I think he is being used by both sides. However much I dislike the current regime, I find it disturbing that innocent people being used as pawns in this very complicated political game. Furthermore I find it abhorrent that some contributing readers in this site favour a military attack, even be it a surgical strike on their beloved country.
UNLESS
by Abarmard on Wed Mar 31, 2010 11:11 AM PDThe was a no body and no body cares. However, he was stolen and it would be an embarrassment for the US government if he came and spoke about his kidnapping experience.
Dear yolanda
by Abarmard on Wed Mar 31, 2010 11:08 AM PDTI believe that's a possibility. But as you have mentioned, there are too many variables involved that can be out of control. The guy will be a liability. Based on human nature, he will do all that he can to contact his loved ones. Services don't like that.
......
by yolanda on Wed Mar 31, 2010 10:57 AM PDTHi! Abarmard,
so the guy is expendable...it is pretty sad......I believe he also has parents in Iran.....maybe he is under the US witness protection program and got a new name & new identity already!
yolanda, if he is still alive
by Abarmard on Wed Mar 31, 2010 10:35 AM PDTYou know these services, they use then clean up.
.....
by yolanda on Wed Mar 31, 2010 10:20 AM PDTThe sad part is that the guy's wife is still in Iran......not sure if he has any kids......now he has a broken family!
Apparently, he did not
by Bavafa on Wed Mar 31, 2010 08:44 AM PDTApparently, he did not posses much sensitive information or the information he has provided so far has confirmed no nuclear weapon program in Iran, since the last intelligent estimate in US confirmed that Iran had not been working on such program. But then again, we don't know much about him and what sort of work he did in Iran. With CIA recent track record one can not put much weight in such "Coup"

Iran has no need for nuclear weapons!

Good job CIA
by mahmoudg on Wed Mar 31, 2010 07:39 AM PDToptions are limited. 1) Drain the brain, 2) levy hefty sacntions, or 3) (My favorite), conduct surgical attcaks and implode the regime from within and in the process cleanse Iran of 200K basij and pasdars. One of these has to work and y'all know what my vote is.
