The wig in the roosary is the hair extension used by many.
by Anonymouse on Thu May 20, 2010 05:09 AM PDTMany Iranian women wear these small hair extensions behind their head so they can put up their headscarve so it doesn't fall down all the time. It is fashioable and kind of different and nice.
As for transvestites in all honesty sometimes some women's makeup in Iran is so strong that you doubt what is going on! I doubt anyone would be 'brave' enough to cross dress in Iran in public.

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Fri May 14, 2010 10:15 AM PDTfor the clarification. Nevertheless when people gang up it could easily go from goping into far worse. Of course groping is time honored in our own gool old USA! In some places such as Pakistan acid attacks are common. It just makes me sick to see grown up men gang up on a woman. Don't they have any humanity?
VPK these "men" are not "hitting" they're "groping".

Not real men
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Fri May 14, 2010 08:58 AM PDTThe real response to these jerks is to have others tell them that they are not men. No real man will attack or hit woman. Pure and simple. When a male attacks and hits a woman he is announcing to the world his impotance. The rage that comes from the lack of manhood. We must all make fun of them; let them know what we really think of them.
When the pigs realize how little others think of them they will zip it up. Let them go and hide in shame for their sorry existance. It is pathetic. It is also the currency of Islamists whose honor is shown by beating up girls.
Boy what strong men! Not! They truly make me vomit.

by humanbeing on Fri May 14, 2010 07:44 AM PDTnot hebrew, but aramaic -- not a jewish language exclusively, but rather the lingua franca of the region, including parts of the persian empire at the time.
yes, comrade, been there, done that (the stoning)
by humanbeing on Fri May 14, 2010 09:08 AM PDTthis comment is ENTIRELY mine. rosie's letter was ENTIRELY hers. since she is not active, she asked myself, anahid, and shazde once each to 'handle' some material for her on ic. withdrawal can sometimes be hard, and i hope that when i kick the habit, i'll have support as well.
i mentioned the stoning in the thread which dealt with it, in order to argue that it was not just an islamic thing. you weren't around then.
the ketuba reflects a later stage, and was in fact formulated to COUNTER the biblical ethos, requiring the 'mohar' (cognate of islamic 'mahr' -- it's a regional cultural thing, like stoning, like another pinnacle of culture, circumcision, and not primarily religious, ).
the 'hallmark card' message (as cynics would term it) in this more evolved document is an innovation reflecting perhaps a more universally accepted (see text) attitude of humanizing a woman. it is unclear whether the text implies universally among jews or universally during the period.
finally, a religion that can retain flexibility and make alterations and innovations at different times to fine-tune their shari'a, or halakha, to societal, cultural, and other changes will be able to retain some of its attractions for those who insist on following a religion.

cultural documents: hold your women dear and treat them well
by humanbeing on Fri May 14, 2010 07:18 AM PDTof course treatment of women by men is partly individual, hormonal, evolutionary, sociological.
part however is indeed culturally based, culture including religious tradition (if not practice). i'm the last person to want to admit this. the document i will give below is not a defense of jewish men -- believe me, some are nothing to write home about, but others are wonderful, just like some iranian men -- i refuse to see the clip as an exclusive window on manhood, partly because of personal experience, partly because of incurable optimism.
i myself am secular, and would shudder at the thought that i am some goods he has purchased by contract. but the traditional jewish wedding contract does not only reflect a business transaction (although that's the part that is always emphasized). a few little nuances in the wording are worth highlighting:
those obliging the husband to tend to the 'conjugal needs' of his wife. he has to be attentive to her sexual satisfaction. they are mentioned in the same breath with the obligation not only to take care of her material needs, but to respect her:
"I will work honor, feed and support you in the custom of Jewish men, who work, honour, feed, and support their wives faithfully. I will give you the settlement of [...] silver zuzim, which is due you according to the law of kushta [=Constantinople], as well as your food, clothing, necessities of life, and conjugal needs, according to the universal custom.”
the text, called the 'ketuba' 'written contract' was introduced during times when aramaic was the lingua franca. here is the original of the above passage:
ואנא אפלח ואוקיר ואיזון ואפרנס יתיכי ליכי כהלכות גוברין יהודאין דפלחין ומוקרין וזנין ומפרנסין לנשיהון בקושטא ויהיבנא ליכי ... כסף זוזי ... דחזי ליכי ... ומזוניכי וכסותיכי וסיפוקיכי ומיעל לותיכי כאורח כל ארעא
most jewish men today do not know aramaic, and don't follow the letter of the law anyway.. this is just a tradition, more cultural than religious, and although the business part is somewhat anachronistic, i think the text is well worth reading in a nuanced way: the aramaic term for 'honour' is more like to respect, look up to, appreciate, hold dear , and the term for 'conjugal needs' has a sexual connotation.
with all the bad things i have to say about my religion and society, this little bit, even in the context of a business contract, is a gem.
it is explicitly stated that this is the 'universal custom'.
what happened since then?

Just another mob gathering
by Maast o Deevaane on Fri May 14, 2010 06:08 AM PDTThis is nothing but another “mob” (google “mob culture” to get a better picture) gathering that HAPPENED to be in Iran, Tehran.
It hearts more because it is personal, and our cousins, sons, brothers, fathers could be among them! Or support them by staying quite! It’s happened and will happen, only this time we WATCH it. There are no cameras in prisons and
police stations where girls/boys are raped, burned and killed by the proud sons and daughters of Mohamaad & Ali (now) and/or Kuorosh & Daryoush (before 1979). It also happens when the soldiers & messengers of freedom, democracy and social equality invade.
Not a fan of Israeli state, but they know how to protect their girls!

As you can see, this happens everywhere around the wolrd where there's a lack of education or culture, again, this could only happen with either the islamists, dahatis, or the Americanized/westernized horny retards who lack both culture and dignity.AND THIS VIDEO HAS BEEN REMOVED

by Iraniandudee3 on Thu May 13, 2010 07:24 PM PDT1. You seem to have low self-esteem. If you don't like Iranians then stop assosiacting yourself with us and butting in in our issues and business, cause none's forcing you to.
2. You have this happening everywhere around the world where education or culture is missing, in Iran, these are either the dahati islamist parts or westernized/Americanized Tehrani folks alienated from their actual culture by copying crap from western magazines and watching sattelite t.v's. I've seen much worse shit in the U.s than this in real life aheppning to girls, so what's your take on that? It's obvious that these boys are a bunch of horny retards either Americanized or very religous with little respect towards women, but they're just that, BOYS, not men....
3. You saw how Iran florished under a society actually based on the Persian culture and mentality during the shah's time. Everything wrong in Iranian society has to do with islam and it's arab mentality that it encourages, though the western/American culture and mentality isn't any better.
4. I've lived in Iran most of my life and travel back each 2 years for 2 months or so, so don't try to tell me anything about my own country cause in reality you seem to not know anything about Iran judging by your ignorance, and this has never happened at where I lived, cause if anyone tried this they would be beaten by a mob for such acts, but you wouldn't see Americanized/Westernized girls either from where I'm from.

I have no idea why these videos are featured in the first place. Is this site trying to ruin the image of Iranians or something, don't they have any common sense or dignity?

Good Friday morning Marjaneh:
by Raoul1955 on Thu May 13, 2010 05:54 PM PDTI have a huge smile on my [handsome] face again. To be honest I smile often. :-)
Good morning to you on the other side of the world! I listened to that recording and read your material. Content rich as usual.
I used to think that it is [actually was, to be correct] possible to inculcate means of rational thinking in all humans. After being involved in teaching at higher educational institutions for twenty years or so and engaging people with diverse social backgrounds outside the classroom in conversations, I came to the conclusion that I had been too optimistic about that. For a very simple example, take that blog on the ‘race’ issue that you contributed to. I wonder how many readers actually bothered to look up meaningful material on the so-called ‘race’ after reading your posting! Most of the readers seem to think that people in different geographical regions have different blood composition. :-)
I do have many serious blogs, and perhaps I may post one to see how the readers may react.
Cheers to the new dictator,

I bet this woman was hoping
by BehroozAzarin on Thu May 13, 2010 05:53 PM PDTI bet this woman was hoping that police will come and save her, but the government has decided to give freedom to the public. This woman and the teenagers wanted to be free and do as they wish. I am sure if the police had showed up and arrested these kids, You would have claimed to be their parents. Just as you have been defending other criminals, rapists, drug dealers who were arrested and punished.
This is the result of lack of family values and religion. No true beliver and God fearing person would act this way or torture, lie , steal and do any other wrong.

Any Background to this?
by divaneh on Thu May 13, 2010 05:37 PM PDTI think we need to know a little more about this. Our culture is cruel to women but not in this form. I suspect the girls may have been working on the street. It does not make the act by these boys any less shameful but makes us at least understand the motives. Were these boys the residents of the area attempting to frighten the girls off that area? All in all a shameful behaviour.
