Khamenei has "terminal cancer"

Wikileaks US document quotes Rafsanjani source

Reuters: U.S. diplomatic cables released by online whistle-blower WikiLeaks include remarks from an Iran source in 2009 saying Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has terminal cancer, French daily Le Monde reported.

The source, a non-Iranian businessman based in Central Asia and traveling often to Tehran, "has learned from one of his contacts that (former president Ali Akbar) Rafsanjani told him Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has terminal stage leukemia and could die in a few months," according to an August 2009 cable.

The document, written by a U.S. diplomat, says that Rafsanjani, a critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who has expressed sympathies with Iran's reformist movement, decided on learning of Khamenei's illness to start preparing himself to be a successor.

As Supreme Leader since 1989 Khamenei has final say on policy in the Islamic Republic, which is locked in a stand-off with key world powers over the nature of its nuclear activities.

The document cited by Le Monde is one of thousands of cables leaked by the WikiLeaks website at the weekend that reveal confidential views and information from senior U.S. diplomats overseas that would normally remain confidential for decades.

Le Monde, one of a handful of newspapers around the world given access to the cables, said the Iran documents showed Washington relied on a network of Iran-watchers in the Middle East to shed light on a country it sees as an enigma.

He has had cancer prior to 2009. The reason he is still alive and in relatively good shape is because he is on the best medication money can buy. I'm not sure about the type of cancer though, as mentioned in this report to be Leukemia. I had heard about his cancer being more like kidney or bladder cancer. Whatever he has, let's hope it's terminal. The fact that he has been lobbying for his son, Mojtaba, in Qam does hint of his condition perhaps worsening. 

As sad as it might be, knowing his possible blood/power thirsty successors, Mojtaba, or Mesbah Yazdi, Iran is better off with Khameni at this point.

Here is the likely scenario in case of his death:

First they raise his position to the level of the first imam. Then someone comes forth and says that he recommended that Janati or Ahmad Khatami or another dog be the Valieh Faghih after him. If this one has sense for poetry (and apparently music), those dogs have none but a thirst for blood. Top down changes in our country have always made the things worst for people. The real change has to be bottom up.

I think this is related to the latest of the many rumors that claimed SLK was dying. But he just made a long appearance and speech before the Basij last week, and seemed just fine.

SLK is going to pass away one of these days. But it doesn't in any way appear imminent.
