AP: Iran has paid nearly $15 billion into bank accounts of some 20 million families in the country as compensation for planned cuts in food and energy subsidies, state television reported Friday. State TV said about 820,000 rials ($80) was deposited for every family member as a lump sum for the first two months of the subsidy cuts, which are expected to take effect by mid-March. The recipients will not be able to withdraw the money until the cuts begin, and it's unclear whether the payments will continue after that period. The transactions were completed by midnight Thursday, state TV said >>>

by Roozbeh_Gilani on Tue Nov 16, 2010 04:38 AM PSTTake the bread off people's plates, and be taught the lesson of history: That revolutions are not caused by lack of "freedom". They are caused by lack of jobs, housing and food.

The Big Push!
by G. Rahmanian on Tue Nov 16, 2010 04:09 AM PSTThe big push will come soon. Nothing can save the murderous regime. Nowadays in Iran $80 can only buy you 4 kilos of meat. This move is like prescribing aspirin for a terminally I'll patient on his deathbed.Iranians need democracy and democratic freedoms, not handouts!!!

Wait a minute
by mahmoudg on Mon Nov 15, 2010 09:05 AM PSTWhy are we talking about handouts??? Oh I see, this regime came into existance by buying its legitimacy and now that cash has ran out and no more money left (which was all squandered on terrorism activities in Lebanon and the illegal Palestinian settlements in Gaza and elsewhere), the regime suddenly realized it needs to combat price increases. Didn't the Shah do the same and mobilized students to walk the bazars and control the price? and where did that regime end up!!!!!! Does this cult we call Islam and its ideology not realize the realities of market forces and how prices can and should be controlled?????
Pay a family $80 for subsidies & then cut subsidies worth $800!
by Anonymouse on Mon Nov 15, 2010 06:49 AM PSTW paid everyone $500, remember? Did that solve anything? Not to mention that payment had no string attached unlike the Iran subsidies.
This is going to be a disaster and Islamic Republic will lose more grip. They lost some grip over their sham elections and now this.
