BBC: A small US church says it will defy international condemnation and go ahead with plans to burn copies of the Koran on the 9/11 anniversary. The top US commander in Afghanistan warned troops' lives would be in danger if the Dove World Outreach Center in Florida went ahead. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the church's plan was "disrespectful and disgraceful". Muslim countries and Nato have also hit out at the move. And the US Attorney General, Eric Holder, called the idea "idiotic and dangerous". But organiser, Pastor Terry Jones said: "We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam." >>>

Thexmaster - I can look some more. ....but
by MM on Fri Sep 10, 2010 10:40 PM PDTObviously not all books were destroyed. On the other hand, I was under the impression that Iranians learned about pre-Sassanian history mostly from the Greek sources, so your guess is as good as mine when we talk about isolated events that happened 1400 years ago. And, we have to rely on these sporatic passages that let us glimpse into the past.
MM
by thexmaster on Fri Sep 10, 2010 03:48 PM PDT"Umar sent the message to get the books washed in water and to
burn them because, he said: if their contents were like those of the
Quran, then the God's book is sufficient, and if they were contrary to
Quran,"
This is pretty vague and general. Which libraries were specifically burned? I can't find any information on this. Abdul Rahman ben Khaldoon wrote about this over 600 years after the arab invasion. There are many known library and book burnings throughout history, like the mongol destruction of the house of wisdom or the kurdish book burnings. But nothing on persian libraries being burned.
As for Alexendria:
//ehistory.osu.edu/world/articles/ArticleView...
The final individual to
get blamed for the destruction is the Moslem Caliph Omar. In 640 AD
the Moslems took the city of Alexandria. Upon learning of "a great
library containing all the knowledge of the world" the conquering
general supposedly asked Caliph Omar for instructions. The Caliph has
been quoted as saying of the Library's holdings, "they will either
contradict the Koran, in which case they are heresy, or they will agree
with it, so they are superfluous." So, allegedly, all the texts were
destroyed by using them as tinder for the bathhouses of the city. Even
then it was said to have taken six months to burn all the documents.
But these details, from the Caliph's quote to the incredulous six months
it supposedly took to burn all the books, weren't written down until
300 years after the fact. These facts condemning Omar were written by
Bishop Gregory Bar Hebræus, a Christian who spent a great deal of time
writing about Moslem atrocities without much historical documentation.
The biggest mistake
by Kooshan on Thu Sep 09, 2010 12:22 AM PDTI think the biggest mistake Western countries made (but fear to publicly announce) was to equate Islam with bunch of unholy terrorists and extremists who ONLY use Islam to further their agenda.
This made those extremist popular and the masses gather around them.
I bet burning quran is exactly what these extremists in middle east wants to see. It will further strengthen their foothold and marginalize the true Islam and majority of peaceful Muslims.
So, it takes two to tango. The extremist on this side of the water want to eradicate Islam as a dielectical challenge to Western values. On the other hand, the extremist in middle east want to stir things up to fish in muddy waters. In the middle is caught in this quagmirrearethe muslims and Islam.
It is hard to change Islam because the genuine qoran is not touchable as it was the case few thousand years ago with Old and ne testaments.
So, here we are after ~400years with a moder crusade. This war can not be won by fire power as it was the case 400 years ago.
Thanks MM!

One could see the Koran burning as a "pre-emptive counterstrike"!
I hope he goes ahead w/his plan & burn them! Show the world
by Bijan Douli on Wed Sep 08, 2010 09:53 PM PDTthe crusades never stopped. Remember, what George Bush said upon invasion of Iraq? "This is a crusade and we are going to win it..." Burning would expose the US and it is going to have a huge dent on their imperialist wars! US is scared to lose the people's support in the moslem world. They are spending millions just to fool the moslems that they are their friends! Mardomo khar kardand!
1. Let's look back and see who started the huge protests against the mosque: The NY zionists. Now, that they started the flame and spread it among the stupid fundamentalis, they are seating back and watching it on TV and fan the flames by writing articles in their own newspapers and media. They are in control! Evil minds!
2. Those stupid guys who wanted to build the mosque are idioits! They have no common sense. It proves to me that they are arabs! Why the hell building a mosque in a jewish town who hate them? Instead of keeping a low profile, they are poking them in the eye! I know they have a right, but ......it is stupid! What are they trying to prove?
3. US forces: Leave the moslem countries in the middle east, so these moslems can go home and build their own mosques in their own homeland without the fear of persecuation by jews and christians!
4. saudi arabia will shoulder most of the funding. Watch!
5. If they are allowed burning the quran, they should be allowed burning the torah too. Let's see how those zionists on this site would react.
6. Let us not forget, all these divisions and religions are the work of the Abraham who brought all these religions including islam and screwed the world for thousands of years. otherwise we would be zoroastrians! Damn Abraham for screwing people's minds!
Religion is opium for many minds! peace!
translation of Petraeus statement
by asadabad on Wed Sep 08, 2010 09:31 PM PDTNotice that Petraeus said, "Don't burn the Quran because our soldiers might get killed in Iraq/Afghanistan". In other words, if no soldiers would be harmed as a result--if Iraqis and Afghans put up their hands and said we will be Americas' slave--then it would be ok to desecrate the Quran!
I am glad to see that this war criminal is honest. Not only does he not respect Iraqi/Afghan lives or freedom, he also doesn't care about anyones religious sensibilities either!
thexmaster - look at this article on burning Persian books
by MM on Wed Sep 08, 2010 09:15 PM PDTTerritorial Challenges and Iranian Identity in the Course of History By: Dr. Davood Hermidas Bavand //www.cais-soas.com/CAIS/Iran/territorial_challenges.htm
This is a long article, but I extracted these passages regarding Persian books and the Alexandria Library:
"Even books were subjected to the same fate. Abdul Rahman ben Khaldoon in his introduction (Moghaddameh) writes: When Sa'ad abi Vagghas conquered Iran, he informed Umar ibn Khattab that there were many books in that country and asked what he should do with those books?"
"Umar sent the message to get the books washed in water and to burn them because, he said: if their contents were like those of the Quran, then the God's book is sufficient, and if they were contrary to Quran, then it would be that God Almighty should protect us from their deviation effects. As regards the Alexandria library, Umar replied that everything is in the Holy Book and there is no need for a library."

The Big Picture?..........I hope not.
by 13th Legion on Wed Sep 08, 2010 11:02 AM PDTIt’s just seems so amazingly strange that despite all the warnings:

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the church's plan was "disrespectful and disgraceful". Muslim countries and Nato have also hit out at the move. And the US Attorney General, Eric Holder, called the idea "idiotic and dangerous".
This idiot and his followers are still determined to move forward with this idiotic, sense less and dangerous act that is so UN American and truly takes ignorance to a new extreme!
It makes me wonder, in the name and for the sake of our national interest It would be so easy for the government to order a sanction and ban on such acts and if necessary dispatch the law enforcement agencies such as the local police or the national guard to intervene and prevent such acts of hate that with no doubt would be against our American and global national and international interests and will only create the ground for retaliation on behalf of fanatic Islamic groups and those simple minds that will buy into it!
But on second thought this reminded me of a video I had recently seen and may make one wonder about the big picture and plans that may be in store by bigger powers and interests at play.
See the video on the link below;

This is all I could find:
The Sassanid dynasty fell to Muslim Arab armies in 638 CE. The
academy survived the change of rulers and persisted for several
centuries as a Muslim institute of higher learning. It was later
rivalled by an institute established at the Abbasid capital of Baghdad. In 832 CE, Caliph al-Ma'mūn founded the famous Baytu l-Hikma, the House of Wisdom.
There the methods of Gundeshapur were emulated; indeed, the House of
Wisdom was staffed with graduates of the older Academy of Gundeshapur.
It is believed that the House of Wisdom was disbanded under Al-Mutawakkil,
Al-Ma'mūn's successor. However, by that time the intellectual center of
the Abbasid Caliphate had definitively shifted to Baghdad, as
henceforth there are few references in contemporary literature to
universities or hospitals at Gundeshapur.
Gundeshapur, in this time, became a major link between Islamic and
Greek medicine, because of its previous practices of combining the
Greek, Indian, and Iranian medical traditions. Gundeshapur was a site
where the traditions of Galen and Hippocrates had been preserved, therefore the transition from ancient to Islamic tradition was more coherent.[10] This combination "foreshadowed the synthesis that was to be achieved in later Islamic medicine."[11]
The significance of the center gradually declined. The 10th century
writer Muqaddasi described Gundeshapur as falling into ruins [12]
