EU: Sanctions on 32 Iranian officials

Visa bans and asset freezes for human rights abuses

AP: The European Union has agreed to impose sanctions on 32 Iranian officials for human rights abuses. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Monday that during uprisings across Northern African and the Middle East the brutal regime in Tehran has worsened. He says this has forced the 27-nation bloc to impose visa bans and asset freezes on the 32 individuals. Hague particularly underlined Iran's imprisonment of opposition leaders, the detention of journalists and the use of the death penalty.

Sanctions on 32 Iranian officials

by Soosan Khanoom on

It says this time on the individual ..... I think they should come up with the exact names of those individuals, be more clear, be specific with back up documents not just random thoughts  ......

Then in my opinion , that may actually work cause they are going after each individual personally rather than a sanction that will effect the entire poor nation of Iran .......... That is great and I say do it ...I am all for it and can't wait for this to really happen..

It's about time

What the #### were they waiting for?  These are targeted sanctions, which is just what the doctor ordered.  The EU should have put these sanctions in place a long time ago.

Dear alaaf, the sanctions placed on Iran have been mild.  As you well know, there was a huge international outcry because the iraqi sanctions were too harsh.  As a result the UN sanctions placed on Iran have been so mild that they're completely ineffective.  I think that it's worth it for the sanctions to tighten up a bit, even so much that the ordinary iranian feels the bite.  It's a small price to pay in order to throw these thugs out of power.  I don't think that the average iranian will blame the west for the economic pain.  The iranian peole will and have placed their economic woes squarely on the regime in the past..

They already have. For thirty years. And it's barely had any effects. I don't know what makes them think this new sanctions will achieve anything.
