On the consequences of Subsidy Elimination by IR
by Hooshang Tarreh-Gol on Mon Aug 08, 2011 02:49 PM PDTAccording to some reports IR's retreat, from "Goal Orientation of
Subsidies" (their euphemism for cutting back on social assistance) seems
to have been in reaction to the mass non-payment of energy bills by
poor and working class families.
One unforeseen result of taking away Energy Subsidies is how so many
small and mid-size bussineses have gone bankrupt and out of bussiness due
to their inability to pay the bill for electricity or gas, thus paving
the way for junk imports from China, India,...to flood Iranian markets
and further diminish Iranian made goods and industrial production in
general.
Another unforeseen result of taking away subsidies could be the
overthrowing of IR itself: simply be creating a material base for
opposition to unite, a task no opposition group has been able to do. We
should all thank IR for digging its own grave, by its own hands.

Iran's Economy
by fidelio5 on Mon Aug 08, 2011 01:42 PM PDTis woefully Underdiversified with the vast majority of output derived from Energy.
The manufacturing base is feeble and dominated but inefficient state run factories.
The private sector is at best a crony capitalist system which discourages risk taking, enterprise and investment.
The only real economy in the Middle East is Turkey in my opinion. I dont even think Dubai has a really sound economy in the long run. Way too focused on financial services and tourism.
ALthough at least theyre TRYING to build a real economy with their oil wealth
3.2% is Nominal Rate
by fidelio5 on Mon Aug 08, 2011 01:29 PM PDTNominal meaning unadjusted for inflation.
Inflation has been a persistent problem in Iran due to heavy government involvement (even after the subsidy cuts)
3.2% growth is feeble considering inflation is probably running double digits.
said simply growth is NOT keeping up with inflation ... people are sadly becoming poorer in real terms

Economy is not everything.
by comments on Mon Aug 08, 2011 01:11 PM PDTThe only problem with IRI is the subject of human rights, which is almost everything to me. Economy in Iran has always grown since 20 years ago. Twenty years ago if you sold your house you could have paid 2 months’ rent in here. Now if one sells a house they could buy couple of houses in West (several houses in the US). Economy cannot bring satisfaction by itself.
I try to target what brings value to Iranians, and I don't want to live in denial. If we stay in denial, we are not able to see the big picture that we have always missed in our history.

by Arj on Mon Aug 08, 2011 12:50 PM PDTIn the absence of independant or even accurate state stats, IMF has relied on IRI's own stats (Ahmadinejad's, e.g. 11% unemployment and 14% inflation!) to calculate the GR!
IMF's fornicators
by Jeesh Daram on Mon Aug 08, 2011 12:45 PM PDTIMF (International Molesters & Fornicators) would need to take care of its internal issues with womanizers, fornicators and bribed arbitrators before it'll become able to revive its lost credibility
It is indeed a shame that a country like Iran with so much oil and gas, gold and copper silver and precious commodities would have to rely on a $40 hand out (cash subsidies) in order to receive a blessing from the IMF. A consumer-nation of real estate traders, making money from each other's misery and failure under a regime that has to rely on selling barrels of oil in exchange for eggs and wheat from those it calls its enemies
IMF has no credibility and neither does the British embassy in Tehran that calls the shots and is the power broker of the regime

Afshin jaan: The question is if ....
by Bavafa on Mon Aug 08, 2011 09:50 AM PDTThe West and its allies have any interest in the fall of IRI?
IRI has been very beneficial to the West and its allies so why bring them down?
And the second part of the question would be who to replace them with?
Democracy oriented regime in Iran will not be to the advantage of the West.
