YOU.
by comments on Tue Aug 02, 2011 09:10 PM PDTLet's ignore the crowd. Majority are
always idiot. I'd like to share two notes:
1) I was in Boston, and
I saw people were running around to get help. I realized there was a
trapped owl at the top of the building. Streets were immediately closed,
and firefighters immediately arrived and helped. I wondered in such a devastating
economy where a life of an owl stands?
2) People die.
Really. Some people suicide, some go to a war, some die in an
accident and some get cancer or heart attack. It's nothing unusual about
a death of one person. However, it was really unusual the crowd were
joking while Iranians usually cry to death when someone dies. Let's
prioritize promoting a balance in our culture.
RE: Mental Health: even YOU (i.e. educated,
upscale or at top of the line Iranians): Did (do) you have any idea about
mental health if you or a family member has not gone through? Conclusions: majority sucks. Let’s think of a true leader rather than
thinking what majority think or vote for.
p.s. Google Chrome sucks. I have no idea why it modifies my text format.

by yolanda on Tue Aug 02, 2011 08:24 PM PDTThank you, Jason, for translating the comments by the crowds! Sorry I don't understand any Farsi except "Marg Bar Khamenei" and "Allahu Akbar"
I agree with you that that those comments are terrible, rude, and mean!
I almost had a heart attack watching the end part of the tape 'cause the guy started to bounce on the rope........fortunately the rope did not break!
I hope they have learned a lesson of never hanging any ropes over the freeway!
"cheap entertainment " indeed...
by Roozbeh_Gilani on Tue Aug 02, 2011 05:13 PM PDTFor the crowd in the street and the "foreign" crowd at iranian.com.......
still does not beat munching on tokhme japoni at the front row, watching a public hanging at a main tehran square
Yes, this is what centruies of brutal and reactive dictatorship does to the collective psyche of an entire nation......
"Personal business must yield to collective interest."

by jasonrobardas on Tue Aug 02, 2011 05:03 PM PDTYou all saw the video but did not hear what was yelled by the crowds. I suggest you watch it again with a closer observation. In Iran, people still have the same view of "mental illness' as in the middle ages .
In the middle ages , psychotic patients were chained , punished and imprisoned .This taboo about mental illness was based on the assumption that the patients'soul was invaded by the devil and evil forces.
Watching this video clearly puts you in touch with this outdated mentality . Sadly, to the huge audience , what is happening is not a traumatic situation , a human being in danger of losing life . Instead, it is a happy , funny , festive , comical , entertaining , jovial occasion!
Listen to some of the comments the audience yells " Bendaz mardikeh pedarsookhtera"" throw him down....pour water on him....throw stones at him..."Hit the Fool".......
Is anyone worried all the whistling , shouting or interferance may hinder the task of the FD?
To save the life of an individual, blocking the freeway would be the first sensible step . In the early stages of rescue , he could have fallen and run over by any passing car .
Back to my previous question : "What does it say about the iranian culture or the lack of it ?"
Our Culture
by Faramarz on Tue Aug 02, 2011 12:42 PM PDTThe gathering of the crowds and the comments from the people say so much about the Iranian culture.
Cheap Entertainment!
When I was a kid, people used to throw rocks at the mentally unstable people. It was like a freak show! It hasn't changed much.
This is actually some what distressing
by Bavafa on Tue Aug 02, 2011 12:18 PM PDTI may be using the Western standards in dealing with such emergencies but there are a few things that is stressing regardless:
- The lack of any authority (police) in bringing the crowd into some control
- The stupid cheering from the crowd to encourage him to jump as the coordination must come from FD
- The lack of any ambulance on-site (unless there is one and can not be seen)
- The FD seemingly casual effort (are they from Shiraz)?
On the other hand
- FD seem to have improved since I was living in Iran. The FD truck in our town had missing engine parts
- The guy's amazing balance in tight-rope sitting (he should easily be able to get a job in some circus)
'Hambastegi' is the main key to victory

by yolanda on Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:58 AM PDTIt is a good rescue! They inflated the mattress for the guy for precaution, but the mattress was not even needed at the end!
The guy was lucky that the ropes did not break!
Look at the crowd! At least 500 people were watching the rescue from both sides of the freeway and overpass!
I am glad that they have the equipment and wisdom to rescue the guy without shutting down the freeway! No Persian carmageddon!
Job well done
by David ET on Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:51 AM PDTTwo thumbs up for the professionals at the Tehran Fire Department.
Reminded me..
by comments on Tue Aug 02, 2011 09:41 AM PDTThe guy reminded me a Professor in a US university who went at the top of a building, and urinated on the crowd. He stayed in a mental health hospital for 3 months.
I agree the fire-fighters were pretty effective and professional.
Would you mind stopping IRI involvement in whatever happens in Iran? It is a becoming a mental check for those who see everything on the eye of IRI.
Only racist brings culture in
by Joe L. on Tue Aug 02, 2011 09:28 AM PDTwhen you think that some "other" superior culture would have had people jumping over the rope before the trained official get there, you should check your thinking process and reform asap.
As a traveler to almost every corner of our world, I would tell you that iranian society is one of the "most", if not "the most" passionate, humane, and cultured societies you could possibly imagine. Iranian governing system is struggling to balance traditional thinking and behavior with modernism. many countries have done so only on the surface but a visit to iran allows you to see another level of sophistication in aiming high in reaching modern times.
As far as this video, in most countries in the world if not all, the people would gather to either watch, help, take pictures, or whatever else in diverse and crowded metropolitan cities!
Jason:
by Raoul1955 on Tue Aug 02, 2011 09:04 AM PDTCulture has nothing to do with this situation!
The onlookers are not trained to deal with someone such as the one depicted here. What would you suggest an ordinary person do if confronted with someone who is under ‘mental duress’ and commits an act of violence against others and/or self? Calling 911 and staying clear from the scene, I assume!
Mr. Jason
by Joe L. on Tue Aug 02, 2011 08:54 AM PDTHow you doing bud? Before I answer your out of this world comment, please enlighten us as what regional area are you from (or currently living) so I can give precise example of the heavenly place that you reside!! and how this compares to your culture or lack of it.
.......
by yolanda on Tue Aug 02, 2011 08:47 AM PDTThe fire-fighters were pretty effective and professional to have the guy rescued! The whole operation is less than 11 minutes!
one man's misery
by jasonrobardas on Tue Aug 02, 2011 08:31 AM PDTis the source of entertainment for the unemployed audience who show no sympathy or compassion for a mentally deranged fellow countryman .
What does it say about the Iranians'culture or the lack of it ??
