Adnan Hassanpour: Prisoner of the day

Longest serving prisoner among all imprisoned Iranian journalists

CPJ: On January 25, 2007, security agents seized Adnan Hassanpour, former editor of the now-defunct Kurdish-Persian weekly Aso, in his hometown of Marivan, Kurdistan province, according to news reports. In July 2007, a Revolutionary Court convicted Hassanpour on antistate charges and sentenced him to death. After a series of appeals and reversals, he was sentenced in May 2010 to 15 years in prison, defense lawyer Saleh Nikbakht told the Reporters and Human Rights Activists News Agency.

The government’s case against Hassanpour amounted to a series of assertions by security agents, defense attorney Sirvan Houshmandi told CPJ in 2008. Hassanpour’s sister, Lily, told CPJ that she believed his critical writings were behind the charges. Adnan is one of several political prisoners who, against law, have not been allowed even one day of furlough since their prison terms began. Hassanpour, 31, is currently the longest serving prisoner among all imprisoned Iranian journalists.

Consciences Iranian journalist who have put their principal ahead of their carrier have been paying a hefty price for their act and they all deserve our outmost support in a sustain campaign to free them all.

Hassanpour worked for several publications, and was a passionate defender of the freedom of expression. He was editor of the weekly Aso, published in Kurdish and Farsi, which the government shut down in 2005 for its outspoken defense of cultural rights. In summer of 2005, after the closure of Aso, the authorities summoned Hassanpour several times for interrogations regarding the magazine’s coverage of street protests that had occurred the previous spring.

His trail, on charges relating to his journalistic activities, was postponed twice without explanation. On January 25, two weeks before the date of his trail, intelligence agents unexpectedly detained him without charge. After four months in detention, without access to a lawyer, Revolutionary Court prosecutors charged Hassanpour with “espionage,” “acting against national security,” and “active armed resistance against the state” (Moharebeh), which is punishable by death under Iran’s Islamic Penal Code

I am writing this to condemn persecution and continued incarceration of journalists in Iran. Independent journalists in Iran are being
constantly harassed
