Father of modern freedom has died

Vaclav Havel (1936-2011)

Reuters - Vaclav Havel, a dissident playwright who was jailed by Communists and then went on to lead the bloodless "Velvet Revolution" and become Czech president, died at 75 on Sunday. The former chain smoker, who survived several operations for lung cancer and a burst intestine in the late 1990s that nearly killed him and left him frail for the rest of his life, died after a long illness. He was with his wife Dagmara and a nun who had been caring for him. "Today Vaclav Havel has left us," his secretary, Sabina Tancevova, said in a statement. Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said on Twitter, "Vaclav Havel was one of the greatest Europeans of our age. His voice for freedom paved way for a Europe whole and free." >>>

My admiration is for the 1989 Havel. Not the pro-Iraq war Havel.

International figures' positions on invasion of Iraq

The most well known and highly regarded dissident in Communist Czechoslovakia and later President of democratic Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, Václav Havel spoke in favour of a projected American and Allied invasion of Iraq as early as September 2002, stating that "Saddam Hussein's regime poses a major threat to many nations and to his own people ... there should be international intervention."

God bless his soul!

by ilovechelokebab on

He was such a wonderful man. He was modest and never let ANYTHING get to his head. I was sad to hear of his passing. He never stole, never arranged for anyone to be tortured, raped or murdered unlike Iran's fucking corrupt and dirty criminals. I know I shouldn't bring up the false Mullahs but this is a problem that allot of us have. Long Live Iran And Long Live the Czech Republic!

Philosopher King

by Mahvash Shahegh on

He was the closest to a philosopher king that Plato talked about. I alwayd admired him and continue to do that, since his work and thought will always be alive and discussed. He was my idol.
