Mohammad Seifzadeh: Prisoner of the day

Lawyer imprisoned for “acting against national security”

rahana.org and iranhumanrights.org: On 9 October 2010, Mohammad Seifzadeh, 62, a lawyer and one of the founders of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), was tried at Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court on the charge of “acting against national security” by “establishing the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC)" alongside Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Laureate. He was sentenced to nine years in prison and a ten-year ban from practicing law. Tehran Appeals Court reduced Seifzadeh's prison term to two years on 25 June 2011. Seifzadeh referred to the proceedings as “illegal,” and called the unrelated questioning an “inquisition.” Seifzadeh is in poor health and was briefly hospitalized on 11 November 2011. Evin Prison doctors have stated that Seifzadeh needs to pursue medical treatment outside prison, but prison authorities refuse to allow him medical furlough.

Your Prisoner of the Day is the light of the day. Please keep the light glowing. For as long as Iran produces children like Seifzadeh, there is hope that the scorge of islamism will end and our nation, once again, prevails over evil.
