AFP: The Berlin film festival will honour dissident Iranian film-maker Jafar Panahi, who was sentenced to prison in December, on the anniversary of the Islamic revolution Friday. Following tributes in Cannes and Venice, Berlin invited Panahi to serve on its jury. But though he is free on bail after receiving a six-year jail sentence and a 20-year film-making ban, he is barred from travelling abroad. The 61st Berlinale, as the event in known, has held a place open on the jury, chaired by Italian-American actress Isabella Rossellini, for Panahi "to show its support for his struggle for freedom". "We are still hoping that he will be able to come. We haven't given up," the Italian-American actress told reporters at the festival's opening news conference Thursday, as she sat next to his vacant chair >>>

Please keep your spirit up
by Princess on Sat Feb 12, 2011 03:46 PM PSTIt will not take 20 years. The foundations of the system which is trying to keep your free spirit captive will crumble much much sooner than that. I am sure of it.
What a miserable attempt to oppress free spirits
by radius-of-the-persian-cat on Sat Feb 12, 2011 03:22 AM PSTThe detention of the two film directors Jafar Panah and Mohammad Rasoulof only promoted the interest of the german audience for the independent cinematography of Iran. Never before there were so many movies by iranian directors on the screens and on TV. Movies such as "Women without Men" by Shirin Neshat , "The Green Wave" by Ali Samadi Ahadi, "Darbareye Elly" by Asghar Farhadi, "The circle" byPanahi and "White Meadows" by Rasoulof all show the german audience another Iran, one that loves freedom and culture and that"s wisdom is in a direct line to ancient persian values.
