AP: An Iranian state-owned newspaper says authorities at the Teheran zoo have killed 14 lions that had been diagnosed with an infectious bacterial disease. The Jam-e Jam daily reported on Monday that the lions were suffering from glanders, which is most commonly found in horses, donkeys, mules as well as other domesticated animals. It can spread from infected animals to humans. Veterinarian Houman Moloukpour told the newspaper that mismanagement at the zoo most likely contributed to the lions getting sick. The paper did not say when the lions were killed.

It is a sad news
by MRX1 on Tue Jan 18, 2011 01:13 PM PSTbut the big question is why even have a zoo? the whole country is like giant zoo with strange creatures such as seyd ali, an, larigani, rafsenjani, mousavi you name it. Creatures that are so unique that there should be high demand for them from al the zoos in the world. I hope some one with money and influence buys this stupid zoo in tehran and return these animals to wilderness where they belong.

by statira on Mon Jan 17, 2011 08:30 PM PSTThe Soviet Union( Russia) is believed to have been interested in B. mallei as a potential BW( biological warfare) agent after World War II.
B. mallei is the bactria responsible for the disease( glanders).

by Vattan on Mon Jan 17, 2011 06:31 PM PSTHey reza , I have no idea what amde you feel you have been Garbage for the past 1500 years?? Could you explain your self why you feel that way? I am sure most Iranian do not feel that way. I am Iranian and I proud to be Iranian.
My bet
by divaneh on Mon Jan 17, 2011 05:54 PM PSTMy guess is that a Mola has got into the cage at night time and the poor animals have eaten him and all have got poisoned.
What's wrong with Mullahs? Did we run out of women and children?
by AlexInFlorida on Mon Jan 17, 2011 05:45 PM PSTAfter murdering the people of Iran so wickedly, now the mullahs are turning their eye on anything that is more intelligent than they are. This game of theres will come at a very high price for them once the time comes for a fresh new start.
Reza Pahlavi our original lion will restore freedom and justice, we just need to give him a chance and actively voice our support for change. Freedom is near, spring is coming, Islam in government is going.
This is a very sad news
by Bavafa on Mon Jan 17, 2011 05:43 PM PSTThis is a very sad news and I hope they can stop this disease/progression to other animals. We just visited San Diego zoo for the first time and seeing these magnificent animals up close.

The only question to ask. Frankly, the only relevant comment here.
I hope
by statira on Mon Jan 17, 2011 03:48 PM PSTthey didnt kill the cubs. How many Lions did Tehran zoo have anyway? 14 for just one zoo is way too many! I've never even thought we had that many lions in Iran!
IRI killed'em since lions are SHAHI! Shah'e jangal & on flag!
by Jonny Dollar on Mon Jan 17, 2011 03:50 PM PSTThey don't want anything that represent the shah's time. You are not going to see Soosmars gettign killed, since they represent the arab moslems! It is all conspiracy, isn't it simorgh?
Simorgh, may I ask how old you are? I ask that since you wrote that 6 years ago you had political awakening! Wondering what takes so long? We woke up 31 years ago, right after the revolution.
This animals in this zoo should all be removed and replaced by mollahs and everyone in the regime. Then we should shoot'em!
"God is love!"

by Simorgh5555 on Mon Jan 17, 2011 03:35 PM PSTI beg to differ. I HAVE visited Tehran Zoo 6 years ago before my political awakening. I saw first hand the squalid conditions and cages which the lions and other wild cats. Maybe you should take a trip there yourself and then compare it to the other zoos you have visited.
The murder, yes, MURDER, of these lions is no different from the treatment of human beings. Human compassion starts from respect for small creatures and if the IR terrorists have no respect for the animal kingdom and the landscape then they have no respect for Iran or its human inhabitants.
The IR terrorists are not human however, They are not animals. They are not even Neanderthals. they are pieces of amphibian crap.
Simorgh, this is about animals, not politics
by Rea on Mon Jan 17, 2011 01:16 PM PSTIt's happening all over the place, nothing to do with IRI.
Wild animals, for a start, should not be kept in cages.
Another victim of the Terrorist Islamic Republic
by Simorgh5555 on Mon Jan 17, 2011 12:35 PM PSTThe Islamic Republic has taken over a million human lives
The forests are being cut down to make way for condominiums to house the ever growing population of Iran.
Now these beautiful animals are the latest victims of this inhumane evil terrorist regime which values the life of an invisible superstitious non-existent hidden Imam over normal Iranians.
The lion is the symbol of Iran.
People in Iran are starving and sellign kidney in the black market?
Solution: Give the money to Lebanon and Palestine
Lions and animals eat rancid meat and caged in squalid conditions?
Solution: Give the money to Lebanon and Palestine
Death to the Islamic Republic. I pray to Ahuraz Madza to save this country from the evil yoke of Islam the dirty religion.
Lanat be Mohamad va ale Mohamad.
It's always sad to see wild animals die

by statira on Mon Jan 17, 2011 08:17 AM PSTCity of death! Havent they heard of antibiotics and Isolation! They should know that killing is not always the answer.
@Vattan I don't understand...
by KingReza on Mon Jan 17, 2011 08:09 AM PSTI know this may be a little off topic but it's something that has always bothered me. Where does this mentality of "Look what we were, look what we've become" comes from? We' been garbage for the past 1500 years. We can try and blame it on Arabs, Islam and the mullahs all we want, but at the end of the day we have to accept that for the most part, we're pretty crappy bunch of people.
When Human 's life has no value what do you expect ?
by Vattan on Mon Jan 17, 2011 07:48 AM PSTThese were our national treasures and one after one they get vanished. This is real sad. My Father used to say when the Shah gone he left behind bunch of treasures, places, Jerewly and etc... but when the Mullah will be gone I am wondering what would they leave behind??? Vahean chi bodeem va cheh shodeem . I guess we are moving toward another country like Afghanistan or Sudan. Even they are doing better than us these days.
