by Ari Siletz on Thu Jul 21, 2011 07:42 PM PDTThe Persian Gazelle 2 (actually, Ghazaal e Irani) was built by a Tehran University team.
By the way, I'm surprised no one has griped about my leaving out Qazvin Azad University who also has an entry in the race. Their "Haavyn" (supposedly meaning "Radiating Sun", but Dehkhoda says it means "Summer" in Kurdish" ) is competing too. It is car #73 in the race, max speed 84 mph (135 km/h).
Thanks for clarification Ari Jaan

by Ari Siletz on Thu Jul 21, 2011 04:18 PM PDTThey have had cars that look like these for over 20 years, but the performances were very different.
Here's a comparison of 1987 to 2005 winners:
1987: racetime, 44 hours 54 minutes. Avg speed, 66.9 km/hr.
2005: 29 hour 11 minutes. Avg speed 102.8 km/hr.
In addition, the races get tougher as allowable solar cell area, battery weight and mechanical restrictions are added. This is to guide the designs towards practical solar cars for everyday use.
The car shape changes have been small compared to the progress that has been made since 20 years ago in photovoltaics, battery weight, and material sciences.
not to burst anyone's bubble
by ali_aaa on Thu Jul 21, 2011 03:54 PM PDTbut they had these solar cars in univresity comptition 20 years ago in north america.
Australia Solar Challenge Competition
by Ari Siletz on Thu Jul 21, 2011 11:55 AM PDTIf all goes well, this October 16, Persian Gazelle 2 will be competing in a race to cross Australia (Darwin to Adelaide =3000 km) in the solar powered car. Root for car #22!
MIT (car #4, max speed 113 km/hr, cruising 80 km/hr) and Stanford (car #16, max speed unknown, cruising 85 km/hr) and some other biggies will be in the race.
"Road tests showed that Gazelle 2 can reach the speed of 120km/h, but we believe that it can be increased to 150km/h,"According to Iran team manager.
I hope visas to Australia (or sanction issues) don't become an issue for Iranian team members. One of the questions on the FAQ list for the event is: "What visa do I need to travel to Australia."
If we win, please no Allah O Akbars. Though chants to the ancient Sun God would be in context.
Info.
