DK what have you been smoking on?
by choghok on Thu Jul 07, 2011 05:38 AM PDTIs it too hot in france or you have had too much wine or smoking ganja maybe?
So Shirin Ebadi is endorsed by Khatami who in his turn sidekick of Khamenei, well under what rock have you been sleeping the last 2 years? On what ground do you say that Nobel commitee was lobbied by Khatami? Do you have any proof what so ever? You sound like Ahmaghinejad and Ahmad Khatami and all those charlatans. And when Khatami was beaten and his turban thrown on the street by basijis how come Khamenei did not punish the basijis then?
You lost a lot of credibility in my eyes.

Variations on a theme of Khomeinism
by AMIR1973 on Wed Jul 06, 2011 09:30 PM PDTKhatami is a variation on the same theme that runs through virtually every single politician allowed to hold office or stand for "election" in the IRI from the national to the local level. Every single one are Islamists who believe in the "political philosophy" (such as it is) of their beloved Emam and in the fundamental correctness of the Khomeinist system. Just as there were and are different strains of thought, outlook and emphasis in Leninist or Maoist regimes, likewise there are different Khomeinist tendencies within the IRI. But make no mistake about it, at their core the Mousavi-Rafsanjani-Khatami "reformist" faction of the IRI are cut from the same Islamist cloth as their "conservative" Khomeinist cousins.

by Mammad on Wed Jul 06, 2011 09:00 PM PDT1. Voting in Majles and city council elections is different from presidential elections in Iran. I am not saying these are true elections, but only pointing out facts about what is held under the name elections. These elections are local. Local people run, and talk about local issues. Then, there is the matter of friendship, rivalry, family connections, etc., which makes these elections interesting. When elected, the same guys try to bring money to their districts, just like the way it is done in other nations. Just look at how the number of provinces has increased to about 35. Why? Because being an independent province means more budget for local issues, more roads, more railroads..... That is why at least 50 percent of the people always vote in these elections.
2. You always demand others to present evidence/link for any claim. Where is your evidence that Khatami lobbied for Ebadi?
3. The idea that Ebadi is in bed with the IRI is ridiculous; sorry for the language.
4. I would like to see how one of the opposition leaders in exile, particularly your idols RP and "Shahbanou" Farah fare compared with Khatami. All they have to do is calling on people to gather around Tehran in many places to show their support without saying a word.
5. Khatami is hated by the fundamentalists. Do not accept this from me. Read the websites and domestic press, and you will see it for yourself. So, if people go out and support him, it is just due to the respect that they have for the man. Commenting the way you and people like you do in this way just goes to show how disconnected you are from the facts on the ground in Iran.
6. The mistake that you and many other people in this site make is that you think that if 80 percent of the people are opposed to the IRI, they all want political/social freedom. That is not true. At least that is not their top priority. Many, particularly in smaller towns and villages are worried about the economy, jobs, housing, and education. Respect for human rights is not at the top of their list of priorities, or may not even be in the list. That is why they vote. Voting does not mean that they support the system. No, it only means that they try to solve some of their problems, particularly in elections for the Majles and city councils.

I hate to admit it but Massoud Behnoud may be right after all
by Darius Kadivar on Wed Jul 06, 2011 03:46 PM PDTPeople in Iran are quite capable of going and voting again after all ...
What other choice do they have otherwise ? ...
Exile ? ...
That said if the regime in Syria falls ( something that alas the Saudi Kingdoms and Persian Gulf States don't want) that could bolden people to uprise again.
In the meantime the IRI has means of mobilizing people including encouraging people to vote a guy like Khatami back into office for the sake of appearances ...
The Guy is a Sidekick of the Regime after all ... Then they will ask all these so called Green Opponents to come back in a general amnesty and with the endorsement of their regular Academics in Columbia and elsewhere.
You will see the likes of Shirin Ebadi, and Maziar Bahari will be seen rushing back and greeted warmly on the condition to insist that this is not Revolution but a Civil Rights Movement ...
Ebadi is the best asset of the regime's "respectable" face ...
She owes her Nobel Peace Prize to Khatami and Co who lobbied her in Sweden.
And the Tragic Comic Show can continue for a Second round and another 15 years of Promised reform without ever delivering

A complete boycott of any elections, absent of a truly free and open election, including a referendum for the existence of VF, is and must be the path forward for all Iranians if they ever want to free themselves from tyranny.
Khatami, even at his best days acted as a safety valve for Iran's large dissatisfaction group without yeilding any meaningful freedom for Iranians.
