Tehran Mayor Threatens to Confiscate British Embassy Garden

Qalibaf says cutting hundreds of trees shows UK's "historic hostility"

Press TV: Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said Britain's disregard for the environment at the compound in Tehran's Gholhak neighbourhood is an example of its historic hostility towards Iran. “We believe there is very high capacity for an effective legal action against the UK to retake the old garden back from occupiers,” said Mokhtari, adding that the municipality's legal office has reviewed a thousand documents upon the Mayor's order >>>

Great God Almighty, so the next President will be an Anti-Brit?

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

This is a clear message to the Pro-British Mousavi/Khatami/Rafsanjani crowd.  I don't even know why they plan on putting up a candidate under the conditions, it's not like one of them or their team mates has a hope in hell of really getting elected.  Khameneii has chosen an anti-west approach, which is also inviting a bombing of Iran in the years to come.  Can any one see the logic behind Irans strategy, nothing for Iran & everything for Russia and China.

Khameneii has sided with Russia and China & what is Iran getting in return?  A reactor that reached 50% production capacity and has now been turned back off after a slow decade of getting it built due to US & UK pressure on Russia.  Irans Mullahs politics is about as fruitful as a stone.

Qalibaf is feigning for his masters

by ayatoilet1 on

This is total nonsense.

Qalibaf is being given a pretext to sound very nationalistic and anti-British, when in fact he has been hand picked by the west (including Britain) for a future like Ahmadinejad. Remember Ahmadinejad was mayor once too. He can not touch diplomatic property ...it is their right to do whatever they want there. And he can not do a damn thing about it - and he knows it. So its all made for media bullshit.

As JJ said, he is milking anti-British sentiment, while defacto working for the Brits. The Brits and their agents in Iran are masters of this time of dual-play...ask Rafsanjani ...who called America Evil for his friday prayers at Tehran University, while the very same day accepting a signed bible from Ronald Reagan!

Apparently, almost three years ago due to construction work on the Tehran Metro, the water was cut off to the Compound, as a result trees withered and died, the Embassy is liasing with the Tehran Municipality to re-connect the water!

We should retaliate and cut some trees in Sherwood Forrest.

I'll follow up with Robin Hood.

If the reports are true, it's a shame that the British decided to cut down hundreds of trees in their embassy garden in Gholhak. It's the last thing one of the world's most polluted cities needed.

Nevertheless, under international law no one has the authority to "confiscate" diplomatic property unless Mr. Qalibaf wants to occupy it the way the American embassy was in 1979. Which is unlikely, for now, unless war breaks out.

Meanwhile, Tehran's Mayor (and future president?) will milk anti-British sentiments as much as he can.
