Bahareh Hedayat: Prisoner of the day

Turns 31 in prison

Bahareh Hedayat, 31, is a student and women’s rights activist, member of the Central Council and Spokesperson for the Daftar-e Tahkim-e Vahdat student union, and an activist with the One Million Signatures Campaign for the Change of Discriminatory Laws Against Women. She was arrested by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence for the fifth time in four years at midnight on 31 December 2009. She was transferred to Evin Prison’s Ward 209. She then received one of the harshest prison sentences among student activists, 9.5 years in prison for civil and peaceful activities in national student organization. Hedayat was sentenced to two years in prison for “insulting the Supreme Leader,” six months for “insulting the President,” and five years for “actions against national security,” “propagation of falsehoods,” and “colluding for assembly”. Also an earlier two-year suspended prison sentence for participating in a 2006 gathering to protest discriminatory laws was activated by the court. Hedayat’s cumulative prison sentences total nine years and six months.

On the occasion of her 31st birthday and her fourth wedding anniversary with student activist Amin Ahmadian, Bahareh Hedayat sent him a letter from prison. Persian2English has translated it and you can see both the English and Farsi versions here.

So many of our brave shir-zan are being put behind bars for simply exercising their basic human rights and to demand equal treatment under the law.  These are our brave feature and they deserve our full support in their aspiration for a free Iran and for their immediate and unconditional freedom. MY hats off to each and every one of these brave souls.

her "crime"? being a "women's right activist".

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

Her grass root work both within the students movement (Daftar-tahkim-vahdat) and Women's right (one million signature), are amazing and a clear call to action to all of us who wish for a democratic, just and lawful future for our homeland, instead of the current barbarity of the Islamic so called "republic".

Freedom of Bahareh and all political prisoners of the Islamist regime should be the unifying demand of all opposition groups to the fascist Islamist regime.

Thanks Dear Zendanian

You are actually the ONLY IC poster that comes with an actual solution to an existing problem rather than the rest of us who just talk, talk, and talk ... and we all know that talk is cheap.

Thank you for posting these sample letters for each and every single political prisoner. Thank you for reminding us that there is actually something that can be done NOW.

Support and defend Bahareh Hedayat!

Sample Protest letter:

Dear  virtual family, please take a moment to send this protest letter or use your own version.

Please keep in mind that as we're entering Spring,  for our most courageous political prisoners there will be no Spring to be exprienced; apart from their husbands and loved ones, deprived of the most basic rights inside jails of IR.

Sending a letter would take only a few moments for us, but it would mean so much for them. Many thanks in advance.

I (we) am (are) writing this to condemn persecution and incarceration  of  student activists in Iran. Student activists in Iran are constantly harassed by officials of Islamic Republic.

In particular, this letter is written to express my (our) serious concern about the  health and well being of Ms. Bahareh Hedayat, who has been unjustly incarcerated for three years now.

I (we) demand the immediate and unconditional freedom of  Ms. Bahareh Hedayat, and all other political prisoners, and call on the Islamic Republic of Iran to respect the right of all Iranians to  , organize, assemble and freedom of association and expression.
