Mazdak Ali Nazari: Prisoner of the day

Impisoned for "insulting the Supreme Leader"

Iran Green Voice: Mazdak Ali Nazari, 33, was Editor-in-Chief of Nassim-e Haraaz monthly, a cultural publication, as well as managing the Journalism for Peace website. He is a former Persian Literature student who was expelled from Arak University. In the aftermath of the disputed 2009 presidential election, Mazdak Ali Nazari, a celebrated young journalist who received the 2007 Best Journalist Award, was first arrested at his home on 7 November 2009.

Following three months of detention in solitary confinement, he was released on bail in February 2010. Branch 28 of Tehran Revolutionary Court, under Judge Moghisseh, sentenced him to three years and four months in prison and 20 lashes. His charges included "attending the 2009 street protests," "vandalizing a public bus," "insulting the Supreme Leader," and "blasphemy" among other things. He was not allowed to speak or defend himself in court and he was not allowed to have a lawyer at his trial. A Tehran Appeals court later upheld this sentence in its entirety. Mazdak Ali Nazari appeared at Evin Prison to commence serving his term on 9 October 2011. Read Mazdak Ali Nazari's 22 January letter from prison.

Good point Rahmanian jaan

What's the point of having a lawyer, when lawyers themselves are jailed for trying to do their jobs and standing up for the rights of the "accused".

The juidicial process under the Islamic Republic is a joke, an insult to the very idea of fairness and justice.

Any decent legal system must be completely independent, especially from the ruling elite, so that it is able to hold eveyone to account. The one under the IR, is nothing but an instrument of the Mullahs' reign of terror.

Look at the bright side of this case. Had he been allowed to have a lawyer, his lawyer too would be in jail by now!

Let's all wish a sudden death for the criminal regime of IR.

"He was not allowed to speak in the court or defend himslef"!!!

Justice Islamist style!

Freedom for all political prisoners should be the demand of every patriotic, freedom loving Iranian, regardless of his/her political views.

So many of conscientious journalist have chosen freedom over career and as a result they are spending their promising years behind bars.  They deserve our gratitude and support for their immediate and unconditional freedom.

My hats off to each and every one of these brave souls.
