AFP: The United States, long at loggerheads with Iran over its nuclear aims and crackdown on political dissent, praised Iranian film director Asghar Farhadi for his Oscar win. US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the best foreign language film award for his movie "A Separation" pointed to the "vibrancy and historical greatness" of Iran's independent film industry. "My topper message is simply on behalf of all of us, to congratulate Iranian film director Asghar Farhadi on his Oscar win...," Nuland told reporters at the start of the daily news briefing >>>

In reality, Panahi is still in jail, Farahani can't go back to Iran, Mohsen Makhmalbaf lives in exile, Pegah Ahangarani got arrested twice, Marzieh Vafamehr was sentenced one year in jail and 90 lashes for making Iran look bad in a movie......where is the vibrancy? I see oppression!
Just Out of Curiosity
by Piyalechi on Tue Feb 28, 2012 08:51 PM PSTWhy wasn't this message delivered in Persian by our glorious Persian speaking Mr. Ayre?!...
I thought he got paid by our tax money to do just that; to speak for the Department of State in Persian to the Iranians.
Was he on leave or something?
Humm....
by onlyinamrica on Tue Feb 28, 2012 07:38 PM PSTIt reminds me of the year when Aghadashloo was nominated for supporting actress in the House of Sands. What was going on in politics back then?

If this achievement [art] can be used to mend fences....
by Bavafa on Tue Feb 28, 2012 09:07 AM PSTThen let it be.
The message was of a positive note and in the current poisoned environment, the people of both nations along with their governments can use any and all opportunities if it is in the positive and as an antidotes.
Help it and not block it.

Correction of a Statement by the US Dept. of State
by Jeesh Daram on Tue Feb 28, 2012 06:33 AM PSTMadam Secretary Hillary R. Clinton:
Thanks for taking advantage of the fact that an Iranian director won an Oscar. It must have been the first time in US history that the State Department issued a congratulatory statement regarding a movie. Perhaps to remind us that “we Iranians are good, but it is our government that is bad!” If that is the case, then why did you install them in Iran and supported them in the first place? Why did you then sell arms to Iraq to attack and murder thousands of Iranians and why do you continue to dance with the regime? Nonetheless, despite all your good will, the statement was in error and this was not the first time an Iranian won an Oscar. Please issue a correction and post it on the official movie marquee of the Department of State.

Come on polititians! Do not make it politics!
by long live Iran on Tue Feb 28, 2012 03:31 AM PSTWe are enjoying rare occasion of joy without involving any polititians. Do not change its sweetness into a bitter taste. American polititians insteat of using these occasions to show themselve friendly to Iranian, they must remove the sanction which is driving Iranian into an American-made famine and also remove the redicluse sanction on selling oil and part to passanger airplaines. Are these American think that Iranian are stupid that trying to deceive us with a candy?
Long Live IRAN for EVER.
Keep politics out of this
by kazem0574 on Tue Feb 28, 2012 01:58 AM PSTWhat next? The Israeli government congratulating Farhadi on national TV.
Can’t an Iranian artist achieve anything without it being dragged into politics? IRI does enough of that day in day out and many end up in prison.
His film has already done more for peace than anyone else could have tried. We read that Israeli public are now seeing Iranians as normal human beings. I bet it will have a positive affect on the US public too.
I hope the IRI thugs leave him alone when he returns to Iran.
