Captive Lions Fed Live Donkey in Public VIew

At bird park in Sari, Mazandaran Province

The argument for protecting animals

Dr. Reza Javalchi, an active member of the central council of the SPCA, defends the argument that under the current economic conditions and political climate, wouldn’t it be better if resources are used for the Iranian people rather than animals?

If we wait for all the people’s problems to be solved before attending to animals, it would be impractical because for thousands of years people have been living and the problems have been there. That is, always some people have been poor and some have been rich. At the same time, there are tens of charitable institutions that get hefty budgets to spend on the underprivileged people and fighting poverty.

More importantly, what the association does has no contradiction with attending to the peoples’ affairs. The general goal of the association is to change peoples’ attitude
toward animals. When a man is sympathetic toward animals he will have mercy on other people too.

Our main goal is not to save a single animal, but to revive a culture and line of thought which is present in society, but is largely ignored; that is, paying attention to all creatures.”

Stop pretending you don't understand.

There is a difference between feeding a lion and giving it a live donkeyto simply entertain spectators. If this was in the wild then fair play but this is an exactly the same mentality of the sick mentally disturbed parents who take children to public executions so that they can gloat.
You cashed your paycheque? As Fereydoon Farrokhzad said, "Hichi bad tar az fahesheye maghzi nemishe". And that is exactly what you are

Just some pitiful excuse to spread Iranophobia ...

by kuroshmazandrani on

Lions eat Donkeys

Cats eat birds

Sharks eat smaller fish

Of course the Kababs you eat come from cows that died of old age in a nursing home.

It's actually healthy for lions to exercise their natural instincts.  Zoo animals generally get bored if their natural instincts aren't stimulated.  What should the Zoo keepers have done?  Let the Lion starve?  Feed it a sheep?  Slip a plate of Fesenjoon under the cage door?

Measuring concern by comments is wrong

by Shepesh on

Iranians are not known for their care for animals and there are not many people or organisations for this. While there are established sites where people are active in Humanitarian work for Iran and prisoners. So please stop mcriticising people trying to do something positive, while you give no contribution to the subject. This is one attitude which is common with Iranians.

Thank you JJ for update and thank you for posting

This is what these sites are good all round, making people aware of all issues so slowly and surely we can make steps to improve our situation . Please keep us updated. I am still going to write to Organisations, five minutes  of everyones time which is nothing may make a difference, and if many people do the same change must come. In all areas, humans, animals ... all.

Enough promisses. Untill we have universall animal right in Iran, nothing will happen. You can write letter and email to all the authority. It will be useless and waist of time. Just in one year we went from brutall killing of bears to abusing dogs and cats to this tragic video of helpless donkey. What will be next?

Hafez for Beginners

1% vs. 99%

by Hafez for Beginners on

This reminds me: Of the cruelty with which 99% of the US population were thrown under the bus by the daylight robbery of the 1% - feeding off the wealth of the nation to pocket their "dreams" - not unlike the cruelty of lions eating a live donkey.

OWS at BERKELEY, CA: Any Occupy Wall Street people out there - do watch Marianne Williamson's Berkeley Talk:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHW3gyH0u3c

Marianne Williamson was named as one of the top 50 Influential people of her generation, by Newsweek. A highly inspired Spiritual Being - Oprah promoted her many times, and many of her books are NYT best-sellers. The above talk, is incredible. The above video is incredibly impressive.

Yes - throwing the innocent "to the dogs" is annoying, all around.

Thanks JJ for the good news

by ghalam-doon on

However can we really trust these people. I'm pretty sure the person that you mentioned is a decent man, but I'm talking about the authorities in the zoo.

IMHO exposure is more effective in this case. Writing letters to the mayor might be helpful but remember he works inside this regime. The same regime that categorizes pedophilic behavior as "cultural differences." They see this as another sign of cultural differences.. We should make this video viral to embarrass whoever allowed this barbaric act. That way we might stop it from happening somewhere else. The title and description for this video should be in English too.I'm not that familiar with posting videos on Youtube, but is there a way to post this video again with English title and descriptions?

Good to hear that it is going to be banned ... Thanks JJ

by Soosan Khanoom on

I can't even watch this ...  can't take it.    The same way that I can't take watching the normal practice of boiling lobster and shellfish alive to be consumed by human.  Something that many high class seafood restaurants are proud of in the so called civilized western societies. Now that we are collectively at it, why not blame those live boilings also on Islam ... why not  ?  Talking BS is what we are very good at !!

kazem0574

Thanks "maghshoosh"

by kazem0574 on

Using the links you provided, I managed to write to Sari "Shahr-Dari" also passed on their details to a few international organisations in the West specialised in prevention of  cruelty to donkeys.

This clip is two weeks old, can only hope it will have an affect and I am not the only person trying to do something about it.

At least the lions here seem to have a reasonable enclosure and seemingly not hugely hungry. Although the lioness trying to obstruct the donkey's wind pip took a long time putting it out of its misery. Generally speaking, in the wild lions first suffocate their prey which makes it easier and there is less chance of being harmed by the struggling prey. I guess in this case, captivity has influenced the knowhow and the ability of these lions.

Extremely barbaric, but sadly nothing new

by JavoonDeerooz on

I vividly remeber a similar news story from Shah's era where in Mashad zoo, they used to do the same thing to the poor donkey. Except that on that day , the donkey kicked the lion in the head and killed him. So rant all you want, but sadly it is the nation , not Islam. We choose to pick the worst elements of Islam.

ghalam-doon,

Regarding your quest to do something about this practice, I'm not sure if Western humane societies would do much about it, as you're hoping.  But as you notice at the beginning of the video, the clip has been disseminated by the Iranian SPCA.  So it may be best to start by contacting Iran's SPCA and see what they have or plan to do about it and what they'd recommend outsiders to do.  (Maybe the park has already stopped this practice.)  Here's their site and here's their contact info.

If the practice is still ongoing, here's the site for Sari's mayor's office, which allows for leaving messages at this page.   They handle park services in the town.

by gorgahoo on

It happens in nature all the time. However, in nature the lions quickly go for the neck and suffocate the prey and shorten it's death agony. These caged lions, having lost most of their natural predator instincts and skills, and being used to be fed by a piece of meet thrown to them, prolong the poor donkey's suffering. The shame belongs to the zoo keepers.

fanoos

Here you are, the nation of Hafez, Saddi, and Ferdowsi! Cheering

by fanoos on

the live cannibalism of a donkey by lions! A nation that stands aside and witnesses hanging of its fellow citizens from the cranes can not be blamed for standing there and witnessing the barbaric consumption of an old and tired donkey by these savage lions. A barbaric nation indeed!

divaneh

The unfairness of it all

by divaneh on

Unfortunately feeding the big cats with live animals is practiced in other countries too and can help the health of the predators. We also know that some people travel to Safaris to witness such scenes whilst probably every commentator here has watched it on TV.

What is repulsive is that as usual no thought is given to the kids who witness this. What is even more repulsive is that this poor old donkey does not deserve this. The poor animal has worked hard for a life time and served the ungrateful humans and this is how they thanked him. It is the unfairness of this treatment that upsets us.

Unfortunately the owner of this donkey who sold it for a few more tomans is as materialistic as the rest of that society.

Anonymous Observer

Desensitizing the population to violence and bloodshed

by Anonymous Observer on

you start with animals and work your way up to having people (including children) watch lexecutions in public square.

As someone who knows a bit about animals, zoo operations and animal feeding techniques, I have to say that this is not the way you feed animals in captivity, unless you're in some sort of a nature preserve, where animals have a fairly large area to roam (suqare miles as opposed to a cage).  Even under those circumstances, the donkey would have a chance to engage in minimal defenseive moves to evade capture.  Moreover, even in some of those places animals are fed proceesed meat and not live pray for multitude of reasons, one of which is what we say here: the defenselessness of the prey under artificial condition.

It just looks like in the past 33 years we have become a nation that glorifies gore and blood on every level.  Those who are taking photos of this macabre spectacle belong in that cage.
