Fariborz Raisdana: Prisoner of the day

Economist begins prison term

Radio Zamaneh: Iranian economist Fariborz Raisdana was arrested today in Tehran to serve out a one-year sentence.

The Workers’ Rights Defenders website reports that Rais Dana was arrested and transferred to Evin Prison. He sentence relates to a media interview in which he criticized the government’s plans for restructuring subsidies.

In an interview with Persian BBC, only a few hours after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced his subsidy plans on Iranian state television, Rasi Dana accused the Ahmadinejad administration of “illusion therapy” and emphasized that the government’s actions would wreak havoc on the economy.

His statement led to his immediate arrest in December of 2010, and he was released after a month on bail.

The Middle East Economic Association spoke out against his arrest, calling for his immediate release.

Later, Rais Dana was sentenced to one year in prison for a series of charges including “membership in the Writer’s Association, preparing seditious announcements against the regime, giving interviews to BBC and VOA, and accusing the Islamic Republic of abusing prisoners and holding show trials.”

DEATH TO THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC

by Simorgh5555 on

May his jailers and all who persecute him die an agonizing death when Israel launches an airstrike on their homes and mosques. Inshallah, the IR and their supporters are cleaned out of Iran.

Sample Protest letter:

Dear  virtual family, please take a moment to send this protest letter or use your own version.

Please keep in mind that our magnificient, most brave political prisoners  could and should depend on all Iranians, inside the country and abroad,  to support them. Sending a letter would take only a few moments for us, but it would mean so much for them. Many thanks in advance.

Free Fariborz Raisdana!

I (we) am (are) writing this to condemn persecution and incarceration  of independent intellectuals in Iran. Free thinkers in Iran are constantly harrased and jailed by officials of Islamic Republic.

In particular, this letter is written to express my (our) serious concern about the health and well being of Mr.Fariborz Raisdana; an outstanding Economist: indefatigable denfender of workers' rights: a member of Iranian Writers' Association: and an all around incredibly nice  human being.

I (we) demand the immediate and unconditional freedom for Mr. Fariborz Raisdana, and all other political prisoners, and call on the Islamic Republic of Iran to respect the right of all Iranians to  , organize, assemble and freedom ,  association and expression.

Thanks Ghormeh sabzi for posting about arrest of this economist

by Anahid Hojjati on

So being a member of writers group and stating one's opinion regarding economy are crimes that land one in jail in today's Iran. Sorry to see him arrested and jailed but glad to have an economist voice his take on economic policies of the IRI.
