Sina Zahiri: Prisoner of the day

Accused of "contact" with Mojahedin Khalgh

Committe for the Defense of Political Prisoners: Sina Zahiri, an imprisoned student who is currently serving his two-year sentence inside Security Ward 4 of Rajaee Shahr Prison in Karaj, has been informed of new charges against him.

According to Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners, Judge Abolghassem Salavati, Head of Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, informed Sina Zahiri of his new charges yesterday.

The new charges facing the Azad University student are "contact with Mojahedin-e Khalgh Organization." According to this report, Zahiri was promised by Judge Salavati that in return for accepting the new charges, his sentence would be reduced and his new [additional] sentence will be two years. He was also allowed to visit with his family for a few minutes inside the court. Sina Zahiri, however, strongly refuted the new charges leveled against him.

Sina Zahiri, a Tehran Azad University student, was arrested on 27 April 2010, and was sentenced to two years in prison on charges of "acting against national security," and "assembly and collusion with the intent to commit a crime."

Judge Abolghassem Salavati has allegedly tried in the past to "reach agreements" with political prisoners by offering "short prison terms" in return for their accepting their charges and giving television confessions. It is further alleged, however, that political prisoners who are deceived by these tactics have received heavy sentences just the same.
