Iran test-fires new missile
Xinhua: Iran's Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) have test-fired a range of missiles and unveiled their military achievements in the ongoing joint air defense drill starting on Monday. On Wednesday, the third day of the drill, Iran testified S-200 air defense missile system "successfully" in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, said the commander of Iranian Khatam al- Anbia Air Defense Base, Farzad Esmaili, adding that the missile system has been developed for high-altitude targets >>>

by Faramarz on Sat Nov 17, 2012 07:20 AM PSTS-200 surface-to-air defense system was designed and deployed in the Soviet Union in the 1960's mainly to track and destroy high-flying US reconnaissance plane SR-71 Blackbird that was too high and too fast for the Soviet missiles. That's why it uses a two-stage rocket system; a solid fuel for the first stage and then a liquid fuel to get close to its target.
They were taken out of service by the Soviets in the 80's and then dumped on countries like Libya, Syria and later on Iran. They are also still in existence in some of the ex-Soviet Republics. In 2001, one of the missiles mal-functioned and shot down a Ukrainian airliner, killing a bunch of innocent people.
This system is no threat to the advanced NATO air power and will be destroyed with its radar system in the early hours of any air operations.
