Photo essay: Child of the revolution

by Jahanshah Javid
02-Dec-2007

My cousin, who just returned from a visit to Iran, called today and suggested that there should be some discussion or a dialogue between us and our children's generation. He said many Iranian youths today commonly turn to their parents and say: "We are suffering because YOU made a revolution." I've heard it many times myself, not from my daughter Mahdiyeh, but others. Maybe it's time to give a sincere reply and explain why we did what we did. I'll work on it! For now here's another look back in time on the occasion of Mahdiyeh's birthday, Dec 1, 1982. These photos are from a album my mother made from photos I sent her by mail.

WHATEVER....(One more time)

by Anonymous1 (not verified) on

JJ's past belongs only to himself and himself only! Every one of us has done things in the past that we are not very proud of. To learn from our past deeds and move forward, that is the essence of humanity. What is posted by JJ in this Blog only shows how much he has grown as a conscious man. I hope we all can use that as a model in our lif's. Purpose of my note here is not to toot JJ's horn and to make a BOTT out of him but just to get the point across that we all are human, Having said that, but some of us learn faster than others and certainly we all can learn from fellow Human-Iranians. Now folks lets go finish our Chelo-Kababs.

PS. JJ, good thing you removed my earlier posting on this Blog. It wasn't a well thought out note! ;-)

To Samanoo:

by Rosie T.. (not verified) on

Well, I guess I'm back. I'm sorry you're leaving this site, Samanoo. I wish you wouldn't go. I didn't explain things FOR JJ. I explained my impressions OF JJ. I'e been very clear about the issue at hand: he needs to respond. I'm nobody's proxy. I'm on your side on the response issue, and if you haven't understood that yet, quite frankly you're being paranoid again. And paranoia is a function of FEAR. So would you mind if this perimenopausal Jewish-American "babe" humbly suggests that your paranoid aggression and JJ's silence and most of the rest of the warring that goes on on this site seem to me flip sides of the same coin of fear? You're a bunch of chickens. You're afraid to hear the subtleties in each others' arguments (and silencies) and to me it's all different shades of black. Khaaneh siaah ast. So why go when you can just switch on the light? If not with Javid, if he's not ready, with others with views differing from yours, in this forum which HE provides you as a CIVIL LIBERTARIAN AND FREE SPEECH ADVOCATE (ie, NOT IRI agent...). As I am tired of saying, ANYONE WHO WANTS A PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY FOR IRAN IS ON THE SAME SIDE. So stay here and find common ground with the other factions, rather than going somewhere where you only will hear your own views echoing back to you in a hall of mirrors in your paranoid head (no offense). I think it would be a shame if you left. But, then again, what do I know?

To all JJ supporters, ie, "proxies"

by Samanoo (not verified) on

I can’t believe how gullible you people are. One even posted a cookie guide here for me and the story about your son clearing the cookies for you, that one literally made me laugh at the time and even as I am writing these lines a couple of days later still makes me laugh as I remember it. Honey, I can bring down a site or sniff your ip and rest of your packets as it travels thru 802.11 or put up the satan against your server farm like that. The most annoying thing was you people being the proxy and explaining and talking for JJ. Have you people been living under a rock for the past 30 years, is this how untouched you are with reality? besides, I didn’t hear any explanations coming from JJ himself where in fact the questions were directed to him not YOU. what? the cat has gotten his tongue? Well, that’s the IRI way, isn’t it? always proxies doing the “TALKING” for you, you always staying in the shadows pulling the strings. Anyways, JJ’s silence did most of the important talking and was the answer good enough to realize who he was and is. As for you the “proxies”, you can keep your mole “eteleati” and his site, he serves you and your level of intelligence right. I have had it enough, I am out of here, there're better sites with intelligent audience. but I tell you this that someday we shall see the real justice in our beloved land, IRAN. it is just a matter of time.

Song of Songs

by King Solomon (not verified) on

O that thou wert as my brother,

that sucked the breasts of my Mother!

When I should find thee without, I would kiss thee;

yea, I should not be despised.

I would lead thee, and bring thee into my Mother's house,

who would instruct me:

I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine

of the juice of my pomegranate.

His left hand should be under my head,

and his right hand should embrace me.

I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem,

that ye stir not up, nor awake my love,

until he please.

I completely understand your point. I only try to clarify when I am able to. It is so easy for a snow ball to turn into an avalanche and before you know it the focus is not where it should be.

I prefer to also not apologize for others. I do enough apologizing for my own actions or lack of actions.

Also, by clarifiying things, it allows others to have the opportunity to express their views as well. Like I have said before, every one should have the right to express their views minus the "potty" words. :o) After all the world is watching.

I like your writing so much, it makes me smile honey.
You can expect what ever you think is good from JJ, dear. He is a very respctful journalist for all of us.
This wasn't my question. Indeed it was not a question at all, it was just saying something nicely (with a smile) about your efforts (you and Sasha) since couple of days to bring justification and reasons to clear up any accusation about JJ.
I just said : No need to try that much !

What do I expect from a man who's "so confused?...?" Well first of all I expect it might have been a typo, not a confusion.  Second of all I expect EVERYTHING from him, because of his position in the Iranian world community.  Sorry if I inadvertently accused you of paranoia (as you are accusing JJ of not remembering his daughter's birthday...  :D ) I don't agree the arguments have taken too much time.  The rifts MUST be healed, and it will take the time it takes, and that is that.  As for letting it go, quite right, I'd already decided that.  JJ has the stage now...or not...as he chooses. There will always be another stage...Bye for now.  Catch you later somewhere...in the hive mind....

Thanks for trying sooo much for clearing the air.
Usually I don't reply to such comment, but you two bring me here again to clarify something that I don't want be attributed to me.
there's no Agata Christie's novel here.
I just observed a mistake and asked an explanation. That has nothing to do with all those stupidities which has been commented longly here.
As a matter of the fact, I don't care as much as you two do, who really JJ is (or who was)..etc.
I'd learned long ago not to judge people.
YOu two, actually do too much of nothing.
I like JJ for what he offers now to all of us, and I really enjoy reading opinions and learning from other Iranian.
For the rest : I really don't have that much time.
True, sometimes I judge the "Actions" or "paroles" of the people.
But really, I don't care WHO they are and don't go over board to justify their actions.
believe me, I do not have that much time.
How could you (or me) justify or appollogize (??!!!) for someone who is so confuse that he does not even remember her dauhter's BD ?

Samanoo:. Why I think JJ is not an IRI agent / Photo dates

by Rosie T. on

I think JJ is not a...uh...Hezbolahi stooge.. because his politics are very similar to my mother's.   My mother is a little 82 year old Jewish lady in Florida with a cat who likes to paint and go out for the "early bird specials" for seniors at the Chinese restaurants in Miami.  Definitely not a Hezbolaahi agent.  Sorry if this sounds odd to you, but as a "khareji", that is my outsider's perspective.

In case you haven't noticed, on this site much time and space is dedicated to such blogs and articles as the poems of one Shehr.  Despite the fact that Shehr was posting these poems on many threads, they keep getting featured, and they multiply like mushrooms.  And they are extremely anti-IRI.  I know, I know, someone's going to tell me that that's all a front...that JJ is using Shehr's poetry to DISGUISE the fact that this is a pro-IRI site....and ditto Darius Kadivar's constantly featured Shah era memorabalia is also a ruse, Alimostifi, Rashidian, Kamangir, Azar Majedi...all ruses.Including JJ himself in his last bog harshly criticizing Iranians for not taking a stance against human rights violations in Iran.  JJ asked:  WHY CAN'T ONE BE ANTI-MILITARY INTERVENTION AND ALSO ANTI-HUMANITARIAN CRIMES?  Indeed...why not?  My mother wholeheartedly agrees, bless her heart.

But as long as people argue this way, there really isn't any argument...because if EVERYTING anti-IRI JJ does is a Potemkin village, well, who can argue with you?  You've got it all sewn up.  In YOUR mind...on YOUR terms.  So the only argument I can possibly offer you is to remind you, with all due respect, that: Iranians... are...paranoid. No offense, but every culture displays traits. My fellow Americans for example, tend to be fat, bloated, arrogant, ignorant, simplistic, short-sighted, and so on...Iranians, among other things, are paranoid.  I leave you with that thought as concerns JJ's CURRENT activities.
As concerns his past, I wholeheartedly agree.  Many concerns are being expressed. The goal is unity and community.  So...JJ-joon, THE STAGE IS YOURS!!!    :D

Best regards,

Robin

PS DATES ON PHOTOS:  Oh god.......DON'T YOU PEOPLE KNOW BY NOW THAT JJ IS A DISORGANIZED FLAKE?  HE ALREADY TOLD YOU ON THE WAR PHOTO ESSAY THAT HE MADE THIRTY MISTAKES ON FIFTEEN PICTURES!!!!!!!    What is this, an Agatha CHristie novel? In  JJ's new role suddenly thrust upon him as Synapse-in Chief of the Collective Iranian Planetary Cybermind (congratulations, JJ<,have a cigar...), JJ needs...a secretary....aand other things I've already suggested to him.

You really, really need to  be more careful as to how you date and document  things that you post. As a journalist you know how important it is to be as accurate as possible. Now, they are going to start with the cover up, espionage and whatever else they can think of.

I don't understand why you would leave yourself open for that kind of scrutiny just because you did not take the time to accuratly date some photos.

How internet cookies work.........Samanoo.............:o)

by Sasha on

I only copied and pasted some of the information on the following web link. Anyone who needs or wants futher information please do feel free to check out the web link that I provided. Samanoo, I also needed and wanted to know the answer to your question.

www.howstuffworks.com/cookie.htm

Most Internet cookies are incredibly simple, but they are one of those things that have taken on a life of their own. Cookies started receiving tremendous media attention back in 2000 because of Internet privacy concerns, and the debate still rages.

On the other hand, cookies provide capabilities that make the Web much easier to navigate. The designers of almost every major site use them because they provide a better user experience and make it much easier to gather accurate information about the site's visitors.

In this article, we will take a look at the basic technology behind cookies, as well as some of the features they enable.

Cookie Basics:

In April of 2000 I read an in-depth article on Internet privacy in a large, respected newspaper, and that article contained a definition of cookies. Paraphrasing, the definition went like this:

Cookies are programs that Web sites put on your hard disk. They sit on your computer gathering information about you and everything you do on the Internet, and whenever the Web site wants to it can download all of the information the cookie has collected. [wrong]

Definitions like that are fairly common in the press. The problem is, none of that information is correct. Cookies are not programs, and they cannot run like programs do. Therefore, they cannot gather any information on their own. Nor can they collect any personal information about you from your machine.

Here is a valid definition of a cookie: A cookie is a piece of text that a Web server can store on a user's hard disk. Cookies allow a Web site to store information on a user's machine and later retrieve it. The pieces of information are stored as name-value pairs.

For example, a Web site might generate a unique ID number for each visitor and store the ID number on each user's machine using a cookie file.

If you use Microsoft's Internet Explorer to browse the Web, you can see all of the cookies that are stored on your machine. The most common place for them to reside is in a directory called c:\windows\cookies. When I look in that directory on my machine, I find 165 files. Each file is a text file that contains name-value pairs, and there is one file for each Web site that has placed cookies on my machine.

You can see in the directory that each of these files is a simple, normal text file. You can see which Web site placed the file on your machine by looking at the file name (the information is also stored inside the file). You can open each file by clicking on it.

For example, I have visited goto.com, and the site has placed a cookie on my machine. The cookie file for goto.com contains the following information:

UserID A9A3BECE0563982D www.goto.com/

Goto.com has stored on my machine a single name-value pair. The name of the pair is UserID, and the value is A9A3BECE0563982D. The first time I visited goto.com, the site assigned me a unique ID value and stored it on my machine.

(Note that there probably are several other values stored in the file after the three shown above. That is housekeeping information for the browser.)

Amazon.com stores a bit more information on my machine. When I look at the cookie file Amazon has created on my machine, it contains the following:

session-id-time 954242000 amazon.com/ session-id 002-4135256-7625846 amazon.com/ x-main eKQIfwnxuF7qtmX52x6VWAXh@Ih6Uo5H amazon.com/ ubid-main 077-9263437-9645324 amazon.com/

It appears that Amazon stores a main user ID, an ID for each session, and the time the session started on my machine (as well as an x-main value, which could be anything).

The vast majority of sites store just one piece of information -- a user ID -- on your machine. But a site can store many name-value pairs if it wants to.

A name-value pair is simply a named piece of data. It is not a program, and it cannot "do" anything. A Web site can retrieve only the information that it has placed on your machine. It cannot retrieve information from other cookie files, nor any other information from your machine.

How Does Cookie Data Move?:

As you saw in the previous section, cookie data is simply name-value pairs stored on your hard disk by a Web site. That is all cookie data is. The Web site stores the data, and later it receives it back. A Web site can only receive the data it has stored on your machine. It cannot look at any other cookie, nor anything else on your machine.

The data moves in the following manner:

  • If you type the URL of a Web site into your browser, your browser sends a request to the Web site for the page (see How Web Servers Work for a discussion). For example, if you type the URL //www.amazon.com into your browser, your browser will contact Amazon's server and request its home page.

  • When the browser does this, it will look on your machine for a cookie file that Amazon has set. If it finds an Amazon cookie file, your browser will send all of the name-value pairs in the file to Amazon's server along with the URL. If it finds no cookie file, it will send no cookie data.

  • Amazon's Web server receives the cookie data and the request for a page. If name-value pairs are received, Amazon can use them.

  • If no name-value pairs are received, Amazon knows that you have not visited before. The server creates a new ID for you in Amazon's database and then sends name-value pairs to your machine in the header for the Web page it sends. Your machine stores the name-value pairs on your hard disk.

  • The Web server can change name-value pairs or add new pairs whenever you visit the site and request a page.

There are other pieces of information that the server can send with the name-value pair. One of these is an expiration date. Another is a path (so that the site can associate different cookie values with different parts of the site).

You have control over this process. You can set an option in your browser so that the browser informs you every time a site sends name-value pairs to you. You can then accept or deny the values.

How Do Web Sites Use Cookies?:

Cookies evolved because they solve a big problem for the people who implement Web sites. In the broadest sense, a cookie allows a site to store state information on your machine. This information lets a Web site remember what state your browser is in. An ID is one simple piece of state information -- if an ID exists on your machine, the site knows that you have visited before. The state is, "Your browser has visited the site at least one time," and the site knows your ID from that visit.

Web sites use cookies in many different ways. Here are some of the most common examples:

  • Sites can accurately determine how many people actually visit the site. It turns out that because of proxy servers, caching, concentrators and so on, the only way for a site to accurately count visitors is to set a cookie with a unique ID for each visitor. Using cookies, sites can determine:
    • How many visitors arrive
    • How many are new versus repeat visitors
    • How often a visitor has visited

The way the site does this is by using a database. The first time a visitor arrives, the site creates a new ID in the database and sends the ID as a cookie. The next time the user comes back, the site can increment a counter associated with that ID in the database and know how many times that visitor returns.

  • Sites can store user preferences so that the site can look different for each visitor (often referred to as customization). For example, if you visit msn.com, it offers you the ability to "change content/layout/color." It also allows you to enter your zip code and get customized weather information. When you enter your zip code, the following name-value pair gets added to MSN's cookie file:
    WEAT CC=NC%5FRaleigh%2DDurham®ION= www.msn.com/

Since I live in Raleigh, N.C., this makes sense.

Most sites seem to store preferences like this in the site's database and store nothing but an ID as a cookie, but storing the actual values in name-value pairs is another way to do it (we'll discuss later why this approach has lost favor).

  • E-commerce sites can implement things like shopping carts and "quick checkout" options. The cookie contains an ID and lets the site keep track of you as you add different things to your cart. Each item you add to your shopping cart is stored in the site's database along with your ID value. When you check out, the site knows what is in your cart by retrieving all of your selections from the database. It would be impossible to implement a convenient shopping mechanism without cookies or something like them.

In all of these examples, note that what the database is able to store is things you have selected from the site, pages you have viewed from the site, information you have given to the site in online forms, etc. All of the information is stored in the site's database, and in most cases, a cookie containing your unique ID is all that is stored on your computer.

Please explain this to me, you have this hizbollahee JJ moving about freely in the United States! How is this still possible after 9/11? There were thousands of Iranians that sought refugee status in Europe and the U.S., fleeing the likes of JJ. How does this hizbollahee get to live in the U.S., post pictures of his bloody hizbolalhee years without a visit from the home office.

Didn't his cousin work for the IRI, also? One big happy hizbollahee family.

I don't want his apology - I want him prosecuted and then removed from the U.S. to Saudi Arabia.

Samanoo I checked what I posted and........

by Sasha on

No where did I say JJ statements were wrong or correct. I did state that millions of Iranians were part of the 1979 revolution. Whether they were tricked or full participants is another matter but millions were part of the Revolution that placed the IRI into power. Also I did state that JJ and others that took part in the revolution do need to explain, especially to the younger generation Why? When? Where? and How? of their participation in the revolution.
