Childhood, innocence and war
by Roya Salari

I finally managed to snatch a few examples of my cousin Roya Salari's work. She exhibits around London but painting isn't her day job. She is a mum, film editor and intellectual who keeps it all under her hat. Here is what the
Bridgeman Art Library bio: "Roya Salari, a Persian-born artist, studied at the Central School of Art and Drama in London and later at the London International Film School until 1984. She made short films and worked as a Film Editor for many years until the birth of her son in 1993, when she went back to painting and also read Theology. The imagery of the Christian East and particularly the simplicity of Coptic art and Armenian icons had a great influence on her. Salari now uses religious stories as universal allegories to convey her feelings on contemporary events in her homeland, the Middle East, and life in the West. Childhood, innocence and war, set within desolate, imaginary landscapes, still provide a sense of hope and a search for the transcendental." -- Siamack Salari

by Nazy Kaviani on Sun Aug 10, 2008 09:28 PM PDTThese are marvellous, Siamack! My son and I sat staring at 009 for a long time, seeing such innocence and promise in that painting. He said to me after a while: "I think poems can be written about that painting." Are there more? Does she have a website? Sorry for being so pushy, but the simplicity and honesty of these paintings just took my breath away.
