Piyalechi: You're very kind. It's been a wonderful year. I'm fortunate to have a job that allows me to travel. But even those who have regular jobs don't travel enough. A few hours drive outside every city there's something to see and experience. Do it!

The Renaissance owes a great deal to the East, including Persia. I think we're regaining what we lost... sllllowly...

Some thoughts

Jahanshah, I admire your world travels and I have a confession to make and that is that I have also travelled extensively and have a selection of photographs from my various visits - including the one to Venice a few years ago at the carnival...which was spectacular. Some key points though about any Iranian visiting Venice should be that it become quickly evident that in fact the Venetians had a great deal of contact with Persians through their extensive travels (and monopolisation of the spice trade, which required travel through persian territory). As a result of these travels they were exposed to Iranian poet, writings and concepts. And indeed the very concept of "humanism" which became the 'core' idea that resulted in religioius reformation and the start of the renaisance movement and eventually formed the essence of the age of enlightenment in Europe is in fact sourced from Iranian philosophers and poets (like Omar Khayyam and Sa'adi). Thus Venice proves that Western Civilization is in fact sourced in Eastern Civilization (Persia that is). And in fact that we have within Iran - the very precepts we need intellectually - to defeat the mullahs...as the venetians did in Europe. The whole reformation movement, and the downfall of the catholic church derives from the influence of the venetian merchants in the rest of europe as traders ..spice traders.

Humanism - Persian Humanism - was at the heart of all that.

Notice, also, the grand map of th world with Persian Gulf at the center of it in the Doji's Palace on the grand wall as you walk up the stairs.

If I can post my photos, I think you would find them very complementary to yours.

Travel is key to enlightenment. I admire your voyages. BTW, I am writing this from Rio de Janeiro....its warm, sunny ...and very beautiful in so many ways. More photo's in my trove....

The Brazilians, and in particular Brazilian artists and architects like Nimeyer transformed Barazilian thinking ...with Humanism....derived from their contacts and studies in the 50's and 60's in Italy and Europe. Look where they are today ...

I believe this was the best photo essays I have seen from you so far. The reason for this is that I saw every one of this serie's pictures and just couldnt stop.

JJ, if I may break it to you

1) This was not your best photo essay 2) Venice is not the most romantic spot, any place could be it, if someone's on a honeymoon or wants to feel romantic about being on a 100 euro gondola ride 3) Italian pastries are not the most delicious to the Iranian taste buds, because they're too sweet, no matter how beautiful they look. French or Iranian pastries Are possibly the best.

(Seriously next time you are in the Bay area you should visit Rulli in Larkspur for Amazing Italian pastries)

Beautiful pictures!  Sorry, I couldn't help laughing out loud at the worst tasting pastry torta az pistacchio..... maybe it's the iranian connection ;-)  I'll try to remember that on my visit!
