Keeping the façade

Photo essay: Budapest needs a face-lift, or maybe not

by Jahanshah Javid
01-Oct-2010

Budapest is poor man's Prague, as I call it. Its beauty and charm has yet to recover from Socialism or see much benefit from Capitalism, for that matter. Hungarians have much to offer and be proud of in terms of urban architecture, but there's no money to repair or maintain hundreds of buildings that are over a hundred years old and in need of serious attention. Still, that aged look has its own charm.

JJ, Thanks for sharing these pictures. Some of the buildings remind me of buildings in northern cities of Iran (shomal).

Lovely pictures Jahanshah.

Those pictures of the real face of the town are amazingly objective and true! It was like a long tour around the twon.

You are absolutely right. This beautiful city needs a face lift. It would be a pity to leave all that arcithercheral richness, to rot. I wish they could benefit from some help (maybe the Unesco) to renovate the whole city.
