Niagra Falls Short

Photo essay: A trip to one of the world's natural wonders

The Niagara Falls are the most powerful waterfalls in North America. These voluminous waterfalls are situated on the Niagara River, formed when glaciers receded at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation (the last ice age). While not exceptionally high, the Niagara Falls are very wide. More than 6 million cubic feet (168,000 m3) of water falls over the crest line every minute in high flow, and almost 4 million cubic feet (110,000 m3) on average >>> Wikipedia

What I saw

by Jahanshah Javid on

Shahriar, I only commented on what I saw, not what I didn't see.

Of course there are beautiful parts in Niagra Falls, or the rest of Canada, which I did not see. But the ugly parts I saw are still ugly :)

And yes, the American side of Niagra Falls is even uglier. I was not comparing Canada with America or the other way around.

Enghad defensive nabaashin... engaar keh beh naamoosetoon tohin kardam :)))

JJ, border control

by BoosBoos on

JJ did you get the sense that they were rude to you at the border because your were Iranian or just a general sense that they were being rude to all tourists?

I made a blog for people to write their experiences with discrimination:

//iranian.com/main/blog/boosboos/log-note...

Shahriar

Poor little misguided JJ

by Shahriar on

JJ has not even gone to where most tourists go: The whirlpool (ten-minute drive from where he took his pictures)
//www.richard-seaman.com/USA/States/NewYork/N...

Brock monument and Queenston heights (ten minute drive)
//www.empireniagaratours.com/photo/queenston-...

Niagra-on-the-Lake: //www.tripadvisor.ca/AllReviews-g154999-Niaga...

JJ even missed the most obvious tourist attractions: Butterfly conservatory:
//www.canadatrip.co.uk/niagara-parks-butterfl...

Botanical gardens: //locale.niagaraparks.com/garden/zh/botanical...

The wine route, and so many beautiful restaurants in Niagara on the lake, Queenston heights, etc. etc.

I also suggest JJ to go to Niagara City New York (the U.S. side of the falls) for a comparison (don't forget to pack a gun).

Niagra Falls NY is poor

by sparrowlake on

the population has gone from 250,000 to less then 60,000. The gambling has benefited the Indians only. All on one needs to do is go a few blocks in any direction and the poverty is obvious.

Abarmard

My mistake

by Abarmard on

Sorry, I thought that was American side...

Dear Nazy, I was talking Persian, did you see me? Was I that loud? :)

The border guards ARE too serious.

This is SUCKS To Canada! That's all I can say!

by Esfand Aashena on

The city looks like Atlantic City.  Dunno if "Billions" are made there from tourism, maybe in a several years or so but not every year.

$100 for a ticket?? WOW!  When I was there back in late 80s or early 90s it was like $20 - $30!

JJJ tonight you can also go to the Sculpture Garden, one of the last nights.  Try it before Irene gets here!

Everything is sacred

Good point

by Jahanshah Javid on

Good point Souri about the effects of winter/snow on the roads. But I'm not completely convinced that they cannot maintain them properly. There are lots of cities with harsh winters but Niagra Falls is rich and the city should at least spend more on keeping the city's residential areas clean and well-maintained :)

Souri

I were there on 4th of July

by Souri on

I had recognized the Canadian side as I've been there twice, but  I had got confused by Abarmard's comment.

JJ jon, on the depressing side of the city, I agree with you. It is really ugly! But also I have to  mentione that due to the heavy load of snow that we have here, each winter, every summer you will see the Canadian streets in such desatrous shape.

The big snow removers which work all night to clean the road for the people who must go to work  the next day, break the (asphalt ??) at the same time. They try to repair it during the summer time, but sometimes they do not have time.....and/or money ???!!

Abarmard Jan,

by Nazy Kaviani on

Welcome back! Per chance, while at the Falls, were you with other Iranians, speaking Farsi? ;)

Jahanshah Javid

Thanks

by Jahanshah Javid on

Thanks Nazy. The border guard on the U.S. side happened to be nice and playful. I had heard of bad experiences with Canadian guards before, so... not too surprised, but...

***

Thanks Abarmard. We were on the Canadian side.

Abarmard

Well I wouldn't have seen you

by Abarmard on

I was at Canadian side. Happy Travels.

Nazy Kaviani

Similar reflections...

by Nazy Kaviani on

I enjoyed looking at your travel photos Jahanshah.

I must have been to Niagara Falls six or seven times. The Falls are breathtaking and worth the trip each time, especially when traveling with children or first-time visitors. But I, too, was taken aback by the "circus/Las Vegas" atmosphere.

The border guards are mean on both sides. It was explained to me that "several 9/11 terrorists came into the US through the Canadian border up there," so I guess not doing their jobs properly before 9/11 justifies their extra meanness after 9/11. I hope you feel better after my explanation here.
