Niyaz, the Autobiography

Photo essay

Azam Ali and her band, Niyaz, will be coming to the Bay Area next weekend.  Azam Ali, the band’s vocalist, and her multi-instrumentalist husband, Ramin Torkian live in Montreal with their family.  I was so lucky to get fellow Iranian.com’er Souri’s help to photograph them in their home.  I was then able to catch up with them in Bally on their family vacation to chat for a few minutes.  So, across countries and continents, here’s my interview with the dynamic couple about their music, their lives, and their future plans! Niyaz featuring Azam Ali will perform at Yoshi’s in Oakland on September 17, 2011; at the Rio Theater in Vancouver on September 22; and at the El Rey in Los Angeles on September 25, 2011. Photo credits:  Azam Ali and Ramin Torkian photos by Souri, 2009 concert photos by Shari Rezaei, and Azam Ali’s professional portrait photography by Austin Young.

Thank you all

Thank you all for your kind comments on this feature. Niyaz was absolutely amazing live! And Azam Ali is one of the warmest and nicest entertainers I have ever met. If she comes to your parts, make sure you catch her onstage!

Nabarz

A great band

by Nabarz on

I have all their albums, great music. I did feel sorry for her after the hard time some Iranians gave her for her song in the film 300. She did a public apology on her website!

Tabarzin

Great band! Great voice!

by Tabarzin on

When are they coming downunder? There's a massive fan community in the antipodes.

Bavafa

I LOVE the music and wish I could go to see them

by Bavafa on

Her singing and style reminds of VAS which I have not seen/heard much from lately.  They were one of my favorite group and would seek any opportunity to see them live.

Azam Ali

Her music is a mix of Indian, Oriental, instrumental with some Persian influence. She sings one of Haayedeh's songs in Parsi in her latest solo album. She was born in Iran, but left when she was little and spent time in India before heading West.

VATANAM

Loved the music! Are they Afghan?

by VATANAM on

If yes, how come the song sounded Azari? Didn't understand a word, unfortunately. May be something wrong with my ears. However, I loved the music and her voice. The photos were great, but #1 had too much make up.

Monda

Very Interesting couple and music

I will make an effort to be there!
