Photo essay: Supporters back Ross Mirkarimi's re-election bid in San Francisco
On Friday, May 9th, 2008, a fundraising event for the re-election of Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi in San Francisco’s District 5 was held at the popular Yoshi’s Jazz Club. The gathering had been organized by Professor Elaheh Enssani, Chair, and Paul Osaki, Japan Town Community Center President, as the Vice Chair of the Campaign Kickoff Event*. Four hundred of Ross’ district constituents and supporters showed up to help him get re-elected this November.
Many Iranian-Americans who see Ross at local Iranian cultural and social events are impressed by his interest and dedication to the growth and promotion of the Iranian community in the San Francisco Bay Area. He always shows up full of energy and attention, lending a hand in promoting arts, culture, and social causes.
This time around, however, we learned new things about Ross Mirkarimi. When his colleagues and friends, people active in the politics of San Francisco, spoke about him, they all echoed many of the same sentiments about him as we do. His efforts to build coalitions to improve life in his district were hailed and his enthusiastic embracement of a diverse group of people of all ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds was noted by many. “This is the first time in the history of District 5 that we have a Supervisor who has been so responsive to this community,” said London Breed, a Commissioner with San Francisco Redevelopment Agency.
I was among tens of other Iranian-Americans who had come to support Ross and to wish him success in his re-election. As a second-generation Iranian, Ross has made all of us proud and hopeful about the possibility of Iranians’ successful involvement in local American politics, paving the path for developing a strong voice which is fitting of our vibrant and educated community. Ross Mirkarimi is our first, but he won’t be our last!
* Other speakers were: Michael Johnson, co-owner of Yoshi’s, Jeff Adachi, San Francisco Public Defender, London Breed, San Francisco Redevelopment Agency Commissioner, Aaron Peskin, President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and Art Agnos, Former San Francisco Mayor.

Just Curious
by Anonymous Observer (not verified) on Sat May 17, 2008 08:54 PM PDTIsn't all this free publicity (which is essentially free advertising-if it is, in fact, free) that is provided to Mr. Mirkarmi on this site subject Iranian.com to campaign finance laws? I mean, what is the dollar value of this advertising? Also, does it subject the site to the Equal Time rules? I really don't know the answers to these questions...but was just curious! Perhaps someone can enlighten me!
Ah ah ah...

District 5 Supervisor
by Alahazrat Hajagha on Sat May 17, 2008 06:01 PM PDTSupervisor Ross Mirkarimi is one of the best-known political figures in the City of San Francisco. He has been very progressive in the areas of housing, environment and equality for the City. He is proud of his Iranian heritage and makes us all proud of his achievements.
P.S.: O.K. his Farsi sucks, but I won't hold this against him!
To Shadi
by Alahazrat Hajagha on Sat May 17, 2008 05:49 PM PDTسلام شادی خانم
Not my city's politician, but....

Who in the world is Ross Nikpoor? Or is Ross Mirkarimi's correct name just as irrelevant to you as his political career?
What are you trying to say? Are you critizing the author, the Ross Mirkarimi supporters, Ross Mirkarimi, or the US? You seem to have some anger for everyone! Anger is usually caused by a feeling of helplessness. Don't feel helpless! Get out there and do something. That's what those guys are doing in San Francisco. Don't hate others, and more importantly don't hate yourself! Get active. You can make a difference..really!

by Ari Siletz on Fri May 16, 2008 03:41 PM PDTI'm not in your district, but you'll have my vote when you run for California governor or Senator. Unless there's another cool Iranian running against you. in which case I'll vote for the one with the boomier voice.
Nice Pictures
by Lalé Shahparaki Welsh on Fri May 16, 2008 03:32 PM PDTThanks Nazy for posting pictures of this event. Unifrtunately it was schedule over Motehr's day weekend and so I wasn't able to attend.
We also have Dariush Shahinfar is running for the New ork 21st Congressional District and Susan Amini King County (WA) Superior Judge position. Way to go Persians!I think it's great that so many Iranians are runnig for office and getting invloved in political decision making. We are the newest immigrant group to the United States and after 30 years, we're finally making great strides.
Good Luck

Overload!!!
by Anonymous Observer (not verified) on Fri May 16, 2008 01:17 PM PDTI think this site has been overloaded with propoganda for Mr. Mirkarimi. His picture is plastered all over the site. I guess it makes sense for this site because its operrators are out of San Francisco and they perhaps know Mr. Mirkarimi personally.
The question is though, that if we are so proud of Mr. Mirkarimi for being on a city counsil, which is a pretty minor elected position, what would we do if we ever become like the Lebanese who have had, and still have, memebrs of the House of Representatives, cabinet positions, mayors, senators and Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. military. Our egos would be so big....
