Hagia Sophia
by some art history freak (not verified) on Thu Nov 01, 2007 06:52 AM PDTI dont wanna be a pain ,.....but I 'll take that chance
Hagia Sophia was originally built as a basilic, commisioned by byzantine emperor Justinian. originally built as we know it today somewhere around 530.
Hagia Sophia is a Byzantine church, and was built long before the moslims got there if you actually take a close look at the entire Building the Minarettes look very much out of place, The reason being that they were built 1000 year or so later than the original building.
offcourse Sinan was a geniouse... however none of the mosques in that area have succeeded to shake me personally to my core as the hagia Sophia has....
In fact most of the architectural highlights of Istanbul pre date Islam by a 1000 year or so ...
many architectural gems of Spain as well as turkey went through the same sort of identity crisis... you are a church , now be a moscque ... be a church again ... and so on and so forth....
where's Istanbul??
by Anonymous-haha (not verified) on Wed Oct 31, 2007 11:10 PM PDTTwo of the Middle East studies profs that I knew, who have traveled extensively throughout the world told me that Istanbul is the most beautiful city in the world.
Istanbul is a city of Muslim's ego - when the great Muslim architect,Sinan, was told by Christians that Muslims could never build a dome larger than the one in hagia Sopia, he took the challenge and went on to build a much larger larger dome in Selemiye mosque.
will love to travel to Istanbul one of these days especially to see Sinan's masterpiece.
Enjoy Your Youth Playboy It Won't Last ! ;0)
