The StoveMan in Africa
Photo essay: I have been implementing Fuel Efficient Stove programs in Darfur, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and other countries
by
Vahid Jahangir 20-Oct-2008
Over the years, as the population and demand for wood have surged, a pattern of deforestation has decimated the landscape of Darfur—as it has much of Africa. Deforestation has exacerbated the competition for scarce natural resources and further impoverished a population that barely subsists in a harsh environment. My name is Vahid Jahangiri and I have been implementing Fuel Efficient Stove programs in Darfur, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and other countries. A fuel efficient stove reduces environmental degradation, decreases in indoor air pollution (“IAP”) and corresponding improvement in health (by reducing unhealthy smoke and particulate emissions, which is the leading cause of acute respiratory infections and other smoke-related ailments); decrease in burn injuries to children and fire hazard to camp; improves in quality of life (by teaching marketable stove-making skills to refugees and local women’s organizations, reduces outlays for wood, and freeing up time for income-generation or other educational activates; and improves in morale and emotional well-being of the refugee population (by empowering women to contribute to their own livelihood and providing a positive atmosphere in which they can meet and interact with others). In addition, I have been involved in brining clean water to people of Northern Uganda by drilling over 90 boreholes(water wells). These wells has brought clean water to over 100,000 people.

TRUE HERO
by Anonymous on Wed Oct 22, 2008 10:13 AM PDTA wise man once told that there are five principles to live by:
1) COURAGE
2) DEVOTION
3) LOYALITY
4) INTEGRITY
5) HONOR
Mr. Jahangir you are a prime example of those principles. Your efforts are inspiring to the world.
Admirable Efforts
by Anonymous Observer on Wed Oct 22, 2008 08:28 AM PDTThank you for your efforts Mr. Jahangir. On many occasions I have brought up African and world hunger issues on this site and have asked those with a political agenda who constantly bring up the Palestinain issue (and travel to Israel and stay in first class hotels only to come back and post pieces about how bad Palestinians are suffering) to pay attention to other human rights issues around the world, especailly Africa (at the very least to show their sincerety). I have even posted links to articles about famine and drought in Africa to illustrate the point. And that was the point of my first post, where I was attacked by that seemingly unstable individual with a bag over his face. I wonder about the current state of drought in eastern Africa. I know that a couple of months ago, there was talk about some measures on UN's part to provide some relife. Are you aware of any movement on that front?

Dear Saman
by Anonymous Observer on Tue Oct 21, 2008 03:46 PM PDTWow...what a nice comment.....this must have hurt you personally. I guess you don't even need the DNA test!!! And you are not "anonymous"? I take it that "Saman" is your full name? Since you are so brave, can you disclose your full name to us? News flash for you buddy: There is no such thing as "Palestine". It never existed and whatever hope there was for its creation vanished 60 years ago. It will never come back either....So...get used to it...(please feel free to curl up in a fetal position and cry about it....)
Anyway, I won't stoop to your level. You are just another foul mouthed individual. I flagged your offensive comment. Hopefully, the site's moderators will stick to their standards and delete your comment.

I smell racism...
by Saman on Tue Oct 21, 2008 02:22 PM PDTI’m willing to bet you don’t have the nuggets to travel to Palestine or Darfur … so please save your self the embarrassment by staying anonymous and keeping the sarcasm to yourself … they’re funnier and more credible that way.
I’m also willing to bet you can’t trace your family roots more than a century to realize how much Arab, Afghan, Turk and other kinds of DNA is stamped in your chromosomes … Now are you ready for the News Flash? Eternal Persia is dead. Get used to it and step forward from 2500 years a go to the time you actually exist.
Wow!!! I Did Not Know
by Anonymous Observer on Tue Oct 21, 2008 01:56 PM PDTBeing an avid reader of this site, I did not know that aside from Palestinians there were other human beings suffering in this world!! You mean that there is hunger, civil strife, conflict, genocide and opperession in other parts of the world, and there are more serious human rights issues than a rock throwing Palestinain teenager being shot with a rubber bullet?!!!!
Wow....you learn something new every day!!!!
Persia is Eternal.
Send Vahid to US NOW...
by Saman on Tue Oct 21, 2008 12:54 PM PDTWith today’s US economy and energy crisis … Vahid will soon be introducing/training us on using these stoves. Al-Wahid … u-da-man and make sure to vote for the darker guy in US before leaving for Africa again.

by Balouchi (not verified) on Tue Oct 21, 2008 10:41 AM PDTThank you for your contribution to mankind and humanity as a whole. On the flip side you should consider marketing these to the masses under the same banner of conservation and clean burning fuel and as an alternative to BBQ's which as the pictures testify could be very small and portable, I personally have not seen anything like this in the market.
