Book on Iranian-Armenian watercolorist Sumbat

Armen Der Kiureghian, professor of engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, has published a book about the life and work of his father, Sumbat Der Kiureghian, renowned Iranian-Armenian watercolorist. The Life and Art of Sumbat includes 120 pages of color reproductions of Sumbat’s paintings, drawings, and sketches, as well as Sumbat’s biography, written by his son and full of personal anecdotes and letters. Der Kiureghian compiled the material over a period of 9 years, drawing on archival resources in Iran, Armenia and the United States, as well as interviews with Sumbat’s friends and relatives across the globe. He describes his father’s life through a series of intimate stories and quotations from other writers. Sumbat (1913-1999) was a highly regarded Iranian-Armenian artist, who is particularly admired for his watercolor and gouache renditions of Iranian and Armenian village scenes and of landscapes. A descendant of 17 th century Armenian settlers in the New Julfa district of Isfahan, he embodied the artistic traditions of his people and of his hometown. Of particular note are his “Sumbatisms,” eponymous innovations Sumbat created by turning his newspaper-palettes into abstract depictions of busy street scenes. The Life and Art of Sumbat, 176 pages in hardcover, is available at Sumbat.com , Amazon.com and selected bookstores in Los Angeles, Berkeley, New York and Boston.

Sumbat the Great..

Thank you to Armen for compling the arts and paintings of his father, the great Sumbat. I was a young middle schooler who would pass by his gallery every day and admired his skill. If you really study his paintings you will grasp a sense of adherent to our ancient culture, customs, and religion. His arts are filled with feelings and truth within our society. This book will revive and reestablish Sumbat's reputation as one of the greatest artist of 20th century. Proudly he was an Armenian Esfahanian and a great person whom he left a remarkable name in art history.

is this the same artist known as YERVAND???

 

he was also armenian and from esfahan, and a great friend of my dad....we have 3 of his original paintings here in the us.....they are amazing!  i paint as well, and he was a true inspiration for everyone!

I can’t believe it

Ever since my dad sent me to go to his summer classes (at age 11) in Isfahan I couldn’t paint in any other medium except in watercolor and still I do paint in watercolor. After we left Isfahan many times I thought of him and what I had learned from him. I always wondered what happened to him after 1979 and in many of my trips back to Iran I try to look for him but no result. I can’t believe he was living in Cal. I would have gone to see him. He was one of great Iranian representative watercolor painters. Now I have to check out his book and I wish his family the best. It is shame when such an artist had to live outside his homeland.
